We haven't gotten to do too much on our own (we usually travel to the in-laws'), but one year we drove around to look at Christmas lights in our town while listening to NPR Story Corps and drinking hot chocolate from a thermos and eating popcorn. I hope to do that with our baby this year. He'll be 6 months old and probably fall asleep in the carseat, but it sounds cozy!

I'll be following this thread for more ideas :)

During December, we throw a Christmas party every year and invite all of our friends. I bake goodies for everyone to take home. My sister hosts a cookie exchange each year so we have a fun girls night with our friends. My mom buys us or the grandchildren an ornament each year. My grandmother did this for us, so I had a collection of ornaments when I moved out on my own and I am glad my mom is continuing the tradition for the grandkids.

On Christmas Eve, we go to my aunt's house and make the gumbo for Christmas dinner and do a gingerbread house with my cousins. That night we have dinner and everyone gets PJs. (Old Navy usually has really fun ones and has a good sale in early December.) then we sit around playing board games in our PJs.

On Christmas Day, we wake up and eat breakfast before we open our stockings. (Everyone gets a stocking full of goodies that the various "Santas" brought the night before.). Then we go to my aunt's house for lunch and presents with extended family. Then we go back to my parents and do presents with the immediate family.

We always decorate the weekend after Thanksgiving, including getting our trees (plural!) up. Then in December we do Christmas movies every Friday night and try to invite friends to join us at least once that month. We also make a point of going to target to see the new tin ornaments they put out every year and we always buy the ugliest one we can find.

Then the day before we leave to start our Christmas travels (usually we plan to leave at night) we wake up and pretend it is Christmas. We open each others' gifts and the gifts that people sent to us when we won't be seeing them for Christmas. I make Christmas breakfast (breakfast bake and orange rolls, always). Then we hang out in PJs and watch Christmas movies all morning and early afternoon until it's time to get ready and pack up for traveling.

We usually spend Christmas day at my parents' house and we wake up in the morning there and my mom and I make breakfast (orange rolls, hanky pankies, and mimosas-- going to miss those this year!). Then we all open our gifts, and then we just hang out for a while and usually watch a DVD (inevitably someone gets a movie for Christmas). Later that day we go to my aunt's house to watch her grand kids open gifts and for dinner/dessert. The day after Christmas we go over to my grandma's house to do gifts with my dad's whole extended family.

My DH and I have two traditions. We load up our dogs in the car and drive around looking at Christmas lights on Christmas Eve. We drink peppermint hot chocolate while we drive around.

Our other tradition is to drink mimosas while opening gifts on Christmas Day. :)

We always like to go pick out a tree the first week of December. On Christmas Eve after we've celebrated with family, we'll drive around to look at the lights and then go home and watch a Christmas movie. On Christmas morning, we'll open presents with some music in the background and then make pancakes and hot chocolate for breakfast. M will be 1 this year and I got her some Christmas PJ's, a pretty dress and we'll do a pic with Santa. I also bought a plate for Santa's cookies that I may start doing with her next year. :)

DH and I don't really have any holiday traditions other than where we spend them, and that's really more just for scheduling convenience than anything else (his family does Christmas Eve, mine does Christmas day.) Now that we have Landon I really want to start some and I'm looking for some inspiration! What are your holiday traditions?

Obviously this year he's too young to know or participate too much, but I'm still excited about it! I also like the idea of starting a tradition for just DH and myself, like something for the two of us to do together on Christmas Eve after the kids are in bed, or the weekend before Christmas or whenever - depends on what the tradition is. I just like the idea of having a special thing just for the two of us since so much of this season is focused on the kids and extended family.
