@travelgirl1: Vinegar is actually 5% acetic acid and has been proven to kill bacteria and viruses. I read an article once that said it can kill off cold/flu viruses, but isn't as effective with food borne bacteria. So basically it's a good general disinfectant, but if you've had raw meat on a surface, you'd want to use something stronger.

@Mrs. Bee: @Beebug: does it make everything smell of vinegar? Do you use white vinegar? I like the sound of more natural products. Oh and I guess it doesn't kill germs though... do you use anything over the top?

Thanks loads for the tips, everyone, they're great! My transformation to Cinderella is almost complete : ) Now I just need to get off my butt and buy this stuff!

Looks like I'm in good company, I use vinegar and water for just about everything! Thanks for the tip on making it smell nicer, @IRunForFun: DH will definitely appreciate that.

- Mr. Clean Magic Eraser
- Swiffer dusting cloths
- Vinegar/water mixture (if you want to make this smell better, save the rinds from your citrus fruits - oranges, lemons, etc - and soak them in a large container of the water and vinegar mixture for several days, then transfer to a spray bottle. Voila, citrus cleaner!)

@Bao: I like it. We have it at work, and I'm just waiting for my bottle of Mrs. Meyers to run out at home so I can get this. I'm sensitive to a lot of chemicals, so I like that it doesn't have an over the top smell like the Mrs. Meyers does, which smells strongly like laundry detergent.

I'm in love with the pledge dusting cloths/swiffer style cloths. They pick up and hold onto dust like nothing else. I don't bother with the swiffer duster that has a wand, just stick to the flat sheets and you can pick up so much crud!
I also LOVE Mr. Clean magic erasers. They clean porceline and finely textured surfaces (like the fridge/fridge handle) really well. You can use them with whatever cleaning solution you like - commercial or home made... because vinegar and baking soda are actually chemicals, too :)

I love cheap washcloths for cleaning. I use them to clean spots on the carpet, mop the floors, clean the sink/tub, everything I can. As far as products, I love these:
- Method Wood floor cleaner
- Method laundry detergent/fabric softener spray
- Vinegar/soap/water mix for tile, counters
- Straight vinegar for windows and walls, and in a pinch I'll spray straight vinegar in the toilet to clean it quickly.
- Seventh Generation dish soap (the free and clear kind)

I absolutely live for Mrs. Myers Basil All-Purpose cleaner. The scent is so fresh and crisp that just a few spritzes on the counters help everything to feel cleaner and calmer in moments.

@Bao: YES! I can't clean the toilet without them. I almost get a weird satisfaction out of using them because they're so easy!

My others would be vinegar and baking soda. I can clean pretty much anything with those two items. Cheap, easy, no crazy chemicals. I switched to avoid excess chemicals, but I noticed that vinegar and baking soda do a better job in most cases! When I clean with vinegar I do 50/50 vinegar/water, and when I clean with baking soda I just add enough water to make a paste.
