When I was re-lactating, I did the same thing. I massaged and did breast compressions during, hand expressed after, leaned forward, etc.

@pointybird: @mrs. wagon: How long would it take to get your second letdown? I usually stay on pump for 20 mins and I notice a second letdown but the milk I get from it is nominal.

@mrs. wagon: I have to thank you for your second letdown advice! I thought it was just an urban legend when I first read about it on kellymom but then you mentioned it on another post a while ago and I decided to just stay on the pump even though nothing was coming out. Lo and behold, a second letdown! I get at least another ounce or two, which is huge because I am counting EVERY ounce!

It's weird, for me when I start pumping sometimes there's nOt much like 1/2 oz each side. Sometimes 1oz each then my letdown happens and that's when I get the bulk of my milk!

@mrs. wagon: Interesting! I do notice that after the milk starts, it will start back up again but it's never a lot of extra milk.

My 2nd letdown usually happened around 10 minutes after the first. But the milk output is much less than the 1st letdown.

@winniebee: @jennylynn: This was a long time ago ;) but my second letdown would happen after the milk stopped flowing after the first letdown. I'd keep the pump going and put my head back and really relax, and bam! second letdown. Pretty much every single time. I'd get another good amount of ounces out of that one. But this didn't happen regularly until I was pumping regularly. It was always noticeable for me because letdown kind of hurt for me always, and it always happened after the flow of milk stopped.

OMG I need to pay more attention to this since I'm now exclusively pumping.....I never thought of massaging.

Basically I put on the bustier (hands free) and turn the pump on. Also I drink a ton of water during. I try not to fixate on how much milk I've pumped. I haven't had an issue with letdown - it usually happens within 30 seconds or so. I keep the pump on for 20 minutes (unless LO is screaming or it's the middle of the night.)

@mrs. wagon: When does your second letdown happen? Sometimes I notice it sometimes I don't.

Lots of the same... massage each boob, use the flange to kind of massage the boobs, relax, drink water, and the biggest one-- wait for second let down!

Dang...that's a lot of activity during a pumping session! haha. So awesome. I would just drink a large glass of water and relax. I didn't have any special techniques because I felt like if I concentrated hard enough, it would happen. Whenever I tried a special technique, it never worked and caused me more stress.

How do you pump to get more out of a session, to encourage letdown, etc?

Thought we could share our secrets! Maybe we'll learn a thing or two from each other! ;)

***
I always chug a glass of water before hand.
Massage boobs before and during.
I watch videos of LO and look at pictures. I def notice that it takes letdown longer to happen if I don't watch a video. Often a difference of ~7mins vs ~10-15!
I always switch pumps mid session! ie I'll pull the pump off, massage my boobs, switch left pump to right boob and vice versa.
I'll often pull the flange off prior to letdown to get a better "latch".
I always hand express into the bottle at the end of each session
I'll move the pump in a circular motion
I always lean my body forward

What are some of your pumping techniques?
