I think WCM is just a really great way to get a combination of fats, protein, vitamins, etc. It's good stuff!

After 2 or 3 I don't think milk is as necessary (though it's still good for you assuming you don't have sensitivities). But humans actually need some kind of milk through toddlerhood. Extended breastfeeding is one way to go about it but in the absence of that WCM is great. We use organic.

I never did any research at all because I didn't know there was anything to be concerned about. E went onto WCM at 12 months and took to it straight away.

@MrsSRS: Do you still offer yogurt or cheese?

@2littlepumpkins: Haha, I know DS would be a big chocolate milk fan!

I am concerned about the healthy fats... DS does eat a good amount of avocado, peanut butter, cheese, etc. I think we'll do some wcm, but in moderation like everything else. I'm a believer in balance!

I didn't do much research, mostly just deciding whether to buy organic or not. It may be possible to get everything through other food sources but with toddlers it is pretty difficult to track and ensure that its happening. There have been no issues for us so far, and dd is 3. The only thing I don't recommend is introducing chocolate milk! :silly:

My big girl is still nursing once a day at three years old but has been having wcm on her breakfast since nine months and in a cup since she was twelve months old. I don't think kids need to be drinking copious amounts of milk but I have no issue with it as part of a balanced diet.

@MCD919: Not necessary. DS can drink milk now, but couldn't at 1. We made sure he had coconut oil on toast or stirred into his oatmeal, sufficient to be the same amount of fat in the recommended amount of WCM and we did a calcium supplement. His diet was pretty varied and healthy so I knew he was getting good fats and calcium other places too. We used coconut or almond milk for things like cereal or in baking.

@MCD919: I also have a slight lactose intolerance so we haven't had cows milk in hour for 5 years and I didn't feel like buying milk just for my kiddo. We do almond milk mostly, sometimes hemp, coconut and since my DD has never shown any sensitivity to dairy, we've given her kefir too.

Thanks, Ladies! I have a dairy sensitivity, but DS doesn't as far as I know. I've just read things about the dairy industry and like @catomd00 said, wondering if wcm is really necessary, or if getting the healthy fats, calcium, etc is better through other food sources.

wcm terrifies me and isn't necessary. We do a combo of organic wcm, plant/nut based milk products, and nursing. I prefer DD to get her nutrients from other sources other than wcm.

I didn't do a whole lot of research, but did enough to find out that almond milk didn't have enough protein or fat for my liking and I'm leery of the effects that soy milk may have on estrogen levels (though admittedly I haven't looked through any real peer reviewed scientific studies on this theory). We chose organic cow's milk, but he drinks non-organic milk at school.

We switched him to whole milk from formula with no issues. My son happily took it and is now quite a milk addict. I was nervous and bought that toddler transition formula for a couple weeks, just because he wasn't a big eater. I don't think it was necessary for him since he had no real problems with eating or drinking and his weight has always been average.

Are you concerned about allergies or something else? I didn't do any research at all, and actually couldn't wait to transition as soon as she turned 1, since Baby C was a formula kid and I was tired of buying it and making bottles. We used cow's milk to make oatmeal and some other dishes before she turned 1, just to see rule out allergies, and since there wasn't an issue, we switched as soon as she turned 1.

Honestly, I didn't research it at all. Our ped just said we could transition to WCM at 1 year, and that's what we did. I BF both of my children for just over a year (13 months and 14.5 months), and I wasn't interested in continuing long term. Neither of my children have any allergies, so it was a fairly painless transition.
