I struggle with this. We live in the city in a shared garage that I need to go outside to access. I can't preheat the car bc I can't leave the garage door open for fear of someone stealing stuff. There are constantly people scavenging up and down the alley. And it is literally 0 degrees F. A fleece just doesn't cut it. I try to use blankets but I have harnessed him in once or twice with his warm jacket (but only to go a short distance moving less than 20 mph in slooow city traffic)

I have a single later fleece snowsuit by Columbia, it's awesome. It has parts to flip over the hands and feet and a hood. Because it's single layer fleece it can be worn in the seat. We usually don't even put his boots on, we just flip the footies over and carry him and his boots in to daycare. Has been a life saver. Definitely not THE warmest thing out there but it's safe and we aren't outside long with him dressed that way, just to get from A to B.

Here's a good consumer reports guide on whether a jacket is too puffy to be safe: http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2012/12/winter-coats-and-car-seats-keeping-your-child-safe-and-warm/index.htm

It's a pain but we bundle him up in a jacket and hat, then take it off in the car.

I usually just warm up the car first, and like @yoursilverlining, I put her coat & hat on and take it off in the backseat so she's not without it outside.

We just go to the doctor's office, so far we put her in a fleece footed sleeper, hat and then wrap tight with fleece blanket and cover car seat with the plastic rain cover to shut out wind.

I live where it's COLD - tommorow morning is -30. I go out and start the car to warm it up for her. I then dress her in her 3-1 coat. It has a fleece liner that I zip up and a puffer shell that I put overtop. Plus boats and hat and mitts. We go to the car, take off the puffer shell, get in the car seat and put a blanket around her. Big PITA.

I put DS in a thin fleece that he can wear under the straps of the car seat, then cover him with a blanket. To go outside I usually just throw a hat on him and run in. If we are trekking it outside I either put him in a heavier coat or wrap him up in the blanket I use to cover him in the car seat!

I live in Atlantic Canada where it gets COLD (-40C today!) .... For the car we either leave through our garage or I use the car starter so it's always warm enough when we get in. She has a LL Bean winter down coat that is thin but very warm - she wears that with her hats, mitts and boots. A thick blanket goes over her legs once the straps are on.

I can't wait for winter to be over!

LO wears her winter coat to the car and then takes it off, gets buckled into her seat and I tuck a fleece blanket I keep in the car around her seat. She stays toasty warm!

ETA: when we get where we are going, if it's super cold or nasty out, I jump in the back seat and get her coat on fully and hat etc and then get out of the car with her, so she's never really in the cold without a coat for long.

Now we have heated underground parking. I have totally taken her bulky coat off once we reach the car and buckled her in wearing a light fleece and hat mittens and blanket over top. When it was insanely cold and she was a baby I used a patagonia down bunting. It is surprisingly thin and light but very warm.

I dress DD in a coat and then take it off to put her in her car seat with a heavy fleece blanket. Then I put it on her when we get to where we're going. It's annoying but I feel safer with her strapped tightly into the car seat.

This is the resource I followed for winter car seat safety: http://csftl.org/hello-winter-good-bye-coats/

My MIL made a fleece blanket, and I'm in the process of making a car seat poncho. We do a thin jacket, gloves, and a hat (which we remove once the car is warm).

If we lived somewhere really cold, I'd consider getting a remote car starter. They are magical!

I just bundle him up with a few blankets tucked in around him plus a hat. If I'm driving him, he is only outside for moments at a time so I figure he will be okay.

I'm super paranoid! We park in a heated garage so leaving our home isn't an issue, but when we get places or leave I'm not sure what to do. So far I've just put a fleece over her clothes and keep a warm blanket in the car, but today I kind of wrapper her puffy coat around her while we walked to and from the car. I was worried she was cold on our way home but she didn't complain.

I put H in a fleece coat, smush it down as much as I can, and tighten until I don't have any slack in the straps. Now that it's colder, I also put socks on her in addition to her shoes.

If she's wearing her peacoat, I unbutton it and then harness her (the straps are on her clothes but she's still wearing the jacket). I can usually get a good tight fit that way.

We live in the north east where from October-now I've pretty much gotten away with dressing LO in a fleece or hoodie over her clothes and sometimes a blanket to go to and from places in the car seat.

This week temps are dropping into the 20's and we typically travel to and from daycare in the dark. She's really only outside the walk from house to car and car to school.

She has lots of coats - 2 pea coats, a ski jacket with fleece liner, a puffier cord coat, a puffer vest. They all seem too bulky or puffy for her to wear in her car seat. I am I being to overly cautious? Do i put the coat on to get her to the car, then take the coat off strap her in and when i get to day care put the coat back on to get her inside?

Last year she was an infant and we had the JJ Cole bunting over her infant seat plus a blanket. Now she's in a RF convertible seat.

There has to be an easier way....
