I'm pretty sure we break just about every rule. We co-bed, I nurse him to sleep, I let him nap in my arms, etc. It's all about survival for us though - he rarely sleeps more than an hour at a time at night, and an hour during the day is lucky. He's 6 weeks old so hopefully it will start getting better!

I rock her to sleep every night. But I do not care at all. I work full time, so that is some of my only one on one time with her during the day. I've tried putting her to bed wide awake without rocking and she goes right to sleep, so it hasn't caused any issues.

I let her nap as long as she wants on the weekends. If that crosses over bed time or lasts 3 hours or whatever, I don't care.

I let her sleep on her face (if I moved her, she'd just move herself right back!)

We let her sleep on her tummy. I lay in the crib on her back and she flips over, even if she is asleep, within 5 mins she is on her belly.

We def all rules when it comes to how long naps should be. We are lucky if we get an hour. Two hours is basically unheard of.

@edelweiss: He refused to sleep on his back. He would sleep for about 5 minutes and then start screaming. We got a Halo monitor and put that on his side so we wouldn't be so worried. We got a lot of flack from the pediatrician, but you gotta do what you gotta do! He's almost 7 months now and while his sleep isn't great, he still sleeps on his belly (butt up in the air now) and we still put the monitor on him.

We don't have a bedtime routine, but now that's she started solids that might change? Idk, I want her to be easy going when it comes to sleep so I don't want her to have to rely on a routine

My biggest 'rule-breaking' is that I feed her if she wakes up in the middle of the night. She's STTN since she was 2 months, and only woken up in the middle of the night a handful of times and she's 6 months now (besides a week where she was cutting teeth and very sad). I figure she's waking up for a reason so I'm going to feed her! I get a lot of grief from family though, telling me I'm creating bad habits... yeah - not so much!

@edelweiss: LO was really strong from a very early age. She was holding her head up in the hospital. Not for long, but it was very controlled. By 10 weeks, she could hold her head up, so I wasn't too worried about that. Really, though, it was because she DID NOT nap until I put her on her tummy. I was pretty desperate. Life was so much better with a tummy sleeper ;) We have a video monitor, and I checked on her a lot.

There are no rules in our house when it comes to sleep. I nurse her to sleep and just pretend "drowsy but awake" doesn't exist. Because it doesn't. It's asleep or screaming. LO sleeps 8-9 hours though, so Im okay with whatever makes her happy and sleepy!

@Mrs. Lovejoy: @boiledpnut: @Weagle: glad i'm not the only one that found the drowsy but awake rule to be a bit faulty.

@boiledpnut: @Weagle: i so wanted to put LO on his tummy at an early age! how did you guys make the decision? did your LO have any problems/issues with it?

@septemberlove: i remember when i introduced the nap and bedtime routine, i became obsessed with getting every step right, thinking that if i veered at all everything would go up in flames. says something about my state of mind during those early days! (btw the world does not go up in flames when i do something different with the routine)

Drowsy but awake didn't apply to us until 11 months, at least. LO also napped on her tummy from 10 weeks and at night from 4.5 months.

LO has no bedtime or bedtime routine. He's 3 months. And he sleeps on me.

At this point, I just went back to work and a semblance of a schedule is emerging. I come home, snuggle/nurse, play, he hangs out with daddy for a bit, then he comes back to me, nurses, and we're both asleep by 10-10:30. He wakes up around 3 to nurse and we are back to sleep by 3:30 and I get up at 6:30. Sometimes he will nurse then, sometimes he waits until 7-7:30 and then he sleeps from whenever he nursed last until 9:30-10:30.

We should probably introduce a bedtime routine...

I agree on the drowsy but awake stuff. DS is asleep when I put him down or I'd never get to sleep myself. We also let him sleep on his stomach since he was about a month old.

Oh jeez. Well LO is only 8W, so I'd say we break all of them. Agree with the drowsy, but awake state- it has yet to work but I try it every time!

i've heard that one should wake up their LO from a nap if it's too close to bedtime and/or not let them nap too late in the day.

LO is 6 months old and is supposed to go to bed around 5.45pm. several times in the past few weeks, he is exhausted when i pick him up from daycare (he naps horribly there, if at all) and naps from 4:20 to 6pm. basically blows past his bedtime--oops! i don't have the heart to wake him up. when he does wake up, i do bedtime routine and he's in bed by 6:30, and his nighttime sleep is fine.

also, that "drowsy but awake" stage? it can go f*ck itself. i clearly have a lot of angst over that one. my LO did not simply drift off into peaceful slumber if i put him down drowsy but awake.

how about you and your LO?
