I use white vinegar regularly to wipe down surfaces, sometimes with a little baking soda sprinkled on beforehand. But I'm not totally crunchy--I keep those disposable Clorox toilet brush heads (they come in a blue box) for cleaning the inside of the toilet, and a spray bottle of bleach (nothing else gets rid of the mildew or mold in the shower that grows like crazy because we live in a high-humidity climate).

As for baby-proofing/not inhaling the toxic stuff, I keep it at the back of a really high shelf in the linen closet and do my cleaning at a time when LO isn't nearby and I can take him outside immediately after so his exposure to the fumes is minimal. I rinse everything I use the bleach on, too.

@regberadaisy: we r in a similar situation, except sometimes LO is in the bathroom with me and I am either showering or on the pot lol! So I think I will put all the cleaning products in the guest bathroom and just use the vanities in the others for towels, etc., so he doesn't have as much to get into while I am in there. Actually these days I put him in an exersaucer in the bedroom adjoining the bathroom when I am showering, we have jack n Jill bathroom upstairs so the bedroom and exersaucer are visible from the shower.

I just discovered Mrs. Myer's surface scrub. I think it is pretty natural.
@mrs.sketchbook I just looked up the actual name so I corrected it.

@Foodnerd81: I'm planning to use a bucket with a lock on it (we have a zillion five gallon babyproof buckets because we buy granulated chlorine for our pool and they always have safety locks), will use that to house everything, then will put that in the guest bathroom cabinet with a lock. Bucket has handle so I can move it from bathroom to bathroom for cleaning. Hoping that works!

@scg00387: that is a great idea! Soap scum on baby butts grosses me out...but comet on baby butts freaks me out too!

It never occurred to me that we will need to hide the toilet brush and things like that! Ew, just thinking about it.
While pregnant I've started using 7th generation bathroom stuff, but sometimes you just want the Clorox. I'll keep an eye on this thread!

I use baking soda as a scrub! Vinegar & water on the rest. I never thought about toilet brushes needing to be hidden though... ack! (LO just started crawling & pulling up so I'm babyproofing too)

@Mrs. Sketchbook: our house is multilevel with a bathroom on the family room level and one in our bedroom and one off the hallway of the bedroom levels. She's never in the family room wo us with the door closed. The one off the hallway is not in a spot that's after the gate so she's only in there with us as well.

Basically we either keep bathroom doors closed or open bc she's never near them without us. When she's taller and can reach the knobs we'll use those kno covers? Or prob locks for the vanity cabinets and put the toilet brush in there as well?

@regberadaisy: I feel the same way! I just used comet today! What do you do with your chems? What do you do with toilet brushes? Mine used to live behind the toilets but now that is totally unsafe! I don't want to put them in the cabinets because I would really rather arrange things so that locks are not necessary on lower cabinets.

I'm in the process of babyproofing and I need your assistance. I want to dump the harsh chemicals or at least minimize my use of them so that I don't have to worry about their presence in our home. The only place I still use harsh cleaners is the bathroom. For the toilet of course, and also to get rid of soap scum. I've tried vinegar with no luck on soap scum, and I really can't imagine not using a bleach or at least antibacterial on the toilet. Your thoughts? I'm hoping to get to the point where I only have a handful of items so they are very easy to keep locked up.
