@looch: For me it works great, but I have always been really lucky with pretty easy-to-care-for skin. My biggest complaint has always been that I have huge pores, and before I got pregnant I was using Dr. Brandt's Pores No More and it was helping. Since switching to Y2C, they still seem to be on the smaller side. I use the Yes to Carrots cleanser and the Yes to Cucumbers moisturizers.

@eiko2010: I was thinking about switching my stuff to Yes to Carrots when we're in the US. Do you find them to work as well? I mean, I use drugstore stuff to begin with, so I don't expect miracles, but I believe you get what you pay for.

I use European products while living abroad, the rules for additives and ingredients are much stricter, which I appreciate.

I switched to Yes to Carrots for cleanser, moisturizer, body wash, and body lotion. They are ranked 0-2 on the Skin Deep cosmetics database (http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/). All the products are 97-99% natural and all are paraben free. I still use the same makeup, though.

ETA: I chose Y2C because they're relatively inexpensive and you can find them easily at Target. Even our local grocery store sells a few of their products.

it's expensive but worth it to use all natural products that do not contain parabens. most european products and most burts bees products can be trusted. i buy my makeup from Whole Foods now. it sucks but the stuff in lipsticks and other products is awful. things like lead. it's not worth the risk.

i haven't changed any products i use. and although i have not asked my doctor, i can predict his response since he is the type of doctor who says its ok to eat deli meat, soft ice cream, and most sushi and the occasional glass of wine! he said if i listened to everything i read, i wouldn;t be able to eat, lol

I noticed a huge change in my skin when I became healthier (through diet and exercise) and reduced my skin routine to soap and an oil moisturizer. That's all it took.

@ladyfingers: I use Good Guide all the time, great site!

If it's not good for the baby, it's probably not good for you either!

I previously used Obagi Medical Products, which is prescription skincare and works AWESOME. But in the 9 months we were ttc I did a lot of research on it and went ahead and switched to something baby-approved. I now use Caudalie products, which are made from organic grapes and is a wonderful skin line. I read a lot about people who had used hard-core anti-aging stuff like Obagi switching to Caudalie for pregnancy and being happy...It's expensive, but not quite as expensive as Obagi:)

I'm trying not to worry, and my instincts tell me that my OB is right and the amounts can't be enough to do harm and these things aren't even proven to do harm during pregnancy either. It's just tough when there is so much conflicting information out there! Thanks for replying!

I"m not too worried about it as long as I'm avoiding the retinols and salicylic acid. If you're super worried you could check out Good Guide, it's not pregnancy specific but gives ratings to lots of items like personal care, etc. based on the number of ingredients that raise health concerns. Some of that stuff you have to take with a grain of salt, but it's a good place to find stuff with low ratings if you REALLY want to play it safe.

I haven't changed any, my doctor informed me that there isn't enough chemcial in them to do damage. She eased my mind. I feel like anymore people freakout too much about the little things when it comes to pregnancy that it's hard to keep up.

Hope no one minds, but I'm resurrecting this old thread because I am freaking out about pregnancy skincare. Like a few of you, I've been using natural/organic products for a while so I figured I was set for pregnancy. Lately though, I've been reading some stuff about the safety of essential oils during pregnancy. Just about all of the things I use have one of the 'possibly unsafe' herbs/oils in it. The problem is that I can't really find reliable information about whether that includes topical use as an ingredient in a lotion or soap (not slathering myself with just the oil.) My OB says forget about all this stuff, but I can't! Am I being nuts? I'm just wondering which is worse - the parabens, SLS, phthalates etc. or like, rosemary oil?

I switched to Bare Minerals while pregnant and I loved it. I couldn't use my favorite zit treatment while pregnant (it had the salicylic acid) so I got some kind of a powder treatment from bare minerals. I continued to use it for a long time (expensive though!) but now I've switched to BB cream.

I just switched to using milder products. And I checked the ingredients and tried to avoid certain chemicals like salicylic acid and benzoyl. I stopped using my face toner so now I just use a face wash and then a face moisturizer.

My makeup is from J.Edward. I haven't changed my routine since before getting pregnant though. Wash with raw African black soap, Eucerin sensitive lotion after that, Aquaphor under the eyes (night only), and an occasional scrub with St. Ives apricot scrub.

I use organic/natural brands of facial cleansers and makeup. Most of mine come from either The Body Shop or Origins. I was, however, using a facial scrub a few times a week from St. Ives that I just realized has salycilic acid in it (oops!). I'm 15 weeks along now and decided to back off on using it for the rest of my pregnancy - but I'm not too too concerned about its effects. Plus, being overly worried at this point won't do me much good anyway unfortunately!

You just have to do what you feel comfortable with - it seems like doctors are divided on lots of things. There are lots of brands that don't use chemicals in their products, which I try to use anyway pregnant or not. But - we do come into contact with tons of nasty stuff every day - both breathing it in and on our skin....plus women used to wear makeup with lead and arsenic in it, and we're all still around, so don't give yourself too hard of a time ;-) But, if its going to cause stress, there are lots of nice, gentle brands to pick from, thankfully!

I'm using all my same skincare and makeup items. I use organic/natural brands that don't have chemicals or anything anyway. The jury seems to be out on things like salysic (sp?) acid (for breakouts). I asked my OB and she along with at least half of the interwebs said the amount you're using on your skin topically as a spot treatment isn't enough to do any sort of harm. We ingest plenty of chemicals every day just walking around outside, so I'm not going to freak over lotion.

So after going to the dermatologist today, I'm kind of freaked out about continuing to use my same face lotion and face wash, since I don't know if they're baby approved--I know now I need to stop using my night moisturizer for sure because it has retinol or some sort of wrinkle fighting stuff in it. What sort of face/body/beauty products did you use during pregnancy? I found this website: https://www.belliskincare.com/ but it's kind of expensive :(
