I love Janet Lansbury. I have yet to sit down and read her books but I read her articles and listen to her podcasts.
I think those virtues that you list are hard to teach little ones. I know a lot of adults who don't even have these skills. I think over a lifetime you just model, teach by example and when learning opportunities arise, grab them!

2nd the Toddler Discipline wo shame rec - it helps me recognize my triggers as a parent, too. Which makes me a better parent. I've probably read it 2 or 3 times already and am do for another read -- it's been a while and I could use the reminder.

@Freckles: Thank you ! I will definitely check it out!

Yes I just started realize that I need to start the talks about gratitude, kindness, empathy, selflessness....etc. I just assumed he didn't understand it before but yesterday it opened my eyes when I explained to him IN LENGTH that we are lucky with what we have now and some kids don't even have a home, mommy and daddy, and don't even know when they have food to eat or a place to sleep, which is true. He quietly listened and seemingly understood. I will start talking to him over and over and over and over on all these topics I care about from now on and hope to steer the ship around! I will definitely start the "I am thankful for..." as a routine! Thanks so much for the suggestion!

I have been reading No Bad Kids: Toddler Discipline Without Shame by Janet Lansbury. I try to read a little bit every day to remind myself why i need to stay calm and cool when dealing with my threenager. It has been helping so much so far!

My DD does NOT understand gratitude (i sometimes wonder if i have a sociopath on my hands :silly: ) but i think it's something you have to keep discussing with your kid for them to really understand. Could you maybe do "i am thankful for..." as part of your bedtime routine? DD now knows that "right now" or "i want" aren't acceptable and i don't "hear" her when she uses those words. I usually tell her calmly that "i want" is not nice and i will get her whatever it is if she asks me nicely.

What books have you been reading lately + would recommend, and what is the one (or more, if they are mind blowing) advice that you have learned recently which you didn't know about, but makes so much sense and apply so well?

I have The Happiest Toddler on The Block for ages now on my phone and I never really finished it. I am picking it up again and have been reading it. I am just curious to know if there are any good books in taming whining, and tips on teaching LO life lessons for example, being thankful, grateful, humble, kind....etc. My DS (3+ years old) has been a bit of a brat lately, whining about anything from wanting to go out to play RIGHT NOW, to his food was too HOT! I mean can you imagine??? It got me kinda upset when kids in Syria are losing their homes and walking across borders to nowhere, not knowing when they can eat or when they can get settled, and here my son is complaining his food is too hot.

Most of his sentences start with "I": "I am hungry", "I want to play right now", "I need you to sit next to me", "I am tired". Today I started talking to him about being thankful and grateful and he seems to be understanding. I wonder if there are books that outline a "curriculum" that raises kind and non-spoiled kids!
