Our dog has an allergy to wheat, so we use Holistic Select Adult Health Duck Meal Recipe. It's expensive, but it stopped his rashes and tummy issues.

Acana dog food (currently the puppy small breed type). It's more expensive but it is only made from quality, local ingredients. Our pup is small (8lbs) and he doesn't eat very much so we're willing to pay the little extra for his nutrition.

Right now we feed our kitten Life's Abundance because that is what he was used to at the breeder. He seems to like/eat it, which from what I understand is not always a given for cats and dry food. So, we will probably stick with it at least for the time being.

He also gets some Fancy Feast twice per day, also because of the breeder, unless there is something better lying around. We had a good run with turkey after Thanksgiving, and his poop was way less stinky. Not sure what the long term solution will be for wet food, but we get the second kitten in 1.5 weeks so we will wait to disrupt the Fancy Feast routine until the second one is settled in.

Royal Canin isn't the best but it's certainly not the worst. Their prescription diets are good and the vet office I worked at before recommended that line over the Hill's Science Diet. We used to feed Royal Canin but have switched to Blue Buffalo the past couple of years.

My cat has issues with crystals in his urine / UTI so he eats prescribed dry food only. The brand we have is purina urinary U/R. We can't even give him treats or he will go to the ER again. Poor thing. He's been starting to pick up around the high chair nowadays though. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

We feed our cats Blue Wilderness (the grain free option of Blue Buffalo) and they are thriving!! We were told by our vet the duck and rabbit proteins are easiest for cats stomachs to digest, so we stick with the duck variety.

We feed our dog Fromm Gold because of the great quality ingredients, and because they are local! I love buying local to support businesses around here, and knowing that the food itself hasn't traveled very far.

Both cats and dogs eat Taste of the Wild. They all eat it up well, it's not as expensive as Orijen or other brands, and it is really healthy.

@yoursilverlining: Ha! My tabby cat is the ONLY animal in the house that begs for toilet water. She loves to go in there and drink up, lol. The dogs and the other cat will just ask for a bowl refill of water, lol.

We do Acana also, I chatted with my vet about whether he thought it was worth the cost and he was a huge fan. It isn't cheap but I swear in the event of a natural disaster I would have no qualms about feeding it to my family. My dog loves it and has a super shiny coat since we switched.

We fed our dog Natural Balance. Before that he was on a prescription food for skin allergies (Science Diet ZD) as part of a food elimination trial, but his allergies turned out to be more environmental than food related. Before that he ate Solid Gold, which was also a good food.

Taste of the Wild.

Since we switched to this grain-free food, our dog stopped scratching, her coat turned noticeably more silky and shiny, and she seems to need a lot less food overall (~2 cups per day for a 45 pound dog). It's not cheap, but I feel like it's worth it if it will prevent health problems later and make her skin more comfortable now.

@spaniellove: fair. Our dog eats 1 1/4 cups twice a day, but it's still way less than she would eat on something like Iams. I can really tell a difference in her fur and her poop when she has the good food though, so for us, it is worth it!

We like the 4health brand because it's a 4/5 star rated dog food and is actually super inexpensive. We only pay $23.99 for a 20 pound bag (may be 15lb. DH can't remember but he's pretty sure it's a 20lb).

Blue Buffalo for the pup and Royal Canin Protein Preference for the cats.

We had some illness issues with one of our cats 2 years ago and after that he really didn't want to eat enough and lost a lot of weight. So we just bought a ton of different kinds and did a taste test and this was the winner, so we stuck with it.
