I like department stores, it might make me sound really old fashioned, but I like the ability to try on a lot of different things and some labels fit better than others.

I found the best thing to do is find a few shapes that fit you in each "section" of clothing. I always begin with bottoms, because I am pear shaped, but I know that wide leg pants look good, as well as some cropped pants. I don't really wear leggings as pants because of my shape. So that's how I would start, shapes, not designers.

Karen Kane is a great brand to try, as well as Ann Klein. Not too expensive and you can find them in the malls.

I agree with @scg00387, I have some cardigans from H&M that I still wear after 8 years!! How crazy is that? On the other hand, I have some stuff from Ann Taylor and Banana that haven't lasted through 2 seasons.

That being said, my favorite high quality stuff comes from Nordstrom, J Crew, Ann Taylor, BCBG Max Azria, and Banana Republic. I used to work in retail, and there is a huge difference between the quality of items sold in the main retail stores and the outlets, so keep that in mind! Also, Nordstrom is great for buying more expensive items because their return policy is so awesome.

I am J.Crew obsessed. I have to have it imported from time to time to get my fix. I mostly buy it on sale though, but I think the quality is really great.

I personally find it matters more on the materials than the makers (to some extent). I have a few merino wool sweaters from Target that look brand new several years later, and an anthro top that looked gross after a few months that was a rayon blend. I find some of my best quality clothes at TJ Maxx/Marshalls :)

I really like TBD at Nordstrom and Savvy. Also, express sometimes has some decent clothing.

@SleepyMonkey: casual! I'm a sahm (for now) but the field I'm "in" (getting my MA) would be a pretty casual workplace too. :)

I haven't been in Anthropologie in a long time!! Will check all of the above out. :)

Are u looking for casual clothes or work clothes? My go to for work clothes are banana republic and jcrew. Sometimes their casual stuff is ok too - but For casual I like anthropologie but that store has a very specific style. I think you can wear these clothes for years, they hold up really well. I have several suits from jcrew that are 5 years old and I still think they look current and are in good shape.

I am in the process of losing weight and ad that happens I want to start buying things that will last. I need to stop buying a thousand cheap things and buy less better quality items.

Mostly tops/dresses for now since I'm much closer to where I want to be on the top half than the bottom!

Tips?
