Orzo and round pasta is another thing we add to purées. Also, my nanny taught me the trick of marinating ground meat in corn starch, water, and soy sauce (masks the taste of cornstarch) to make it really soft and not clumpy when cooked. Finally you could try other dips if he likes hummus - baba ganoosh, tatziki...oh and my LO likes tabbouleh mixed with yogurt for just a little texture. Or lentil curry//black bean soup that is half purées, half not.

i have a kiddo who wants to eat a bit chunkier but the poor cookie just doesn't seem to be getting any teeth!

Pastina is a great food, you can use it alone, or you can mix it into things.

Well I actually have a 6 month old. He really likes baked sweet potato and avocado that we sorta scrape up with a spoon - that gives a mix of smooth and chunky depending on how you scrape it.

We have also been hand feeding him tiny bits of food to chew and taste. So far he's had blueberry, mango, banana, grapes, and salmon this way. Its a small piece, its not overwhelming, but he can practice chewing and taste it.

I've been trying to get him to eat more protein and veg and not just sweet things all the time, so we've started some meat and veg purees (turkey and veg, beef and veg and rice - just steam and throw into your blender or food processor. You can add a little bit of apple, butternut squash, or sweet potato to sweeten it if you need to). The texture on that can be as smooth or chunky as you want.

You can give him juicy but hard things he can sorta scrape with his teeth or gum or suck on. Cucumber spears, apple or pear slices, corn on the cob, and banana come to mind.

@hotchildinthecity: Lol - mine would only eat stuff mixed with yogurt too. Also, my LO took several months to go past just holding the food to actually eating it. I'm not sure how this translates to an older child with feeding delays, but I'm guessing it might take longer than you think for him to make that leap.

Thanks all! These are excellent ideas. I forgot to say I've tried eggs and he wouldn't go for it unless i mixed it in yogurt.

He absolutely loves to hold food but has not gotten the whole "self feeding" thing down. He will lick food or mimic like he is eating it, but not actually take that step.

What about soft sweet potato fries? They are much squishier and softer than regular fries. maybe he would like being able to hold it?

Also, scrambled eggs? guacamole? Rice?

Same as hummus, I'd just take cooked fruit, and mash it a bit less each time. Or maybe cool a bunch, then add in a few larger bits that aren't quite as cooked. Then just keep upping the ration of unmashed to mashed.

@hotchildinthecity: also how about making your own hummus and you can blend it less smoothly each time. Then maybe blending in other veggies too.

What about adding pastina stars to purées? You can add more as he gets used to the texture and eventually it will be more pasta and less puree.

I've spoken about my feeding issues with my son here before, but he is at the eating level of maybe a 6 month old? (He is 28 months). Over the last couple of weeks we've been able to get him to feed himself pouches and eat soft foods from a spoon. The spoon was a big acheivement because he was terrified of utensils.

So far we've tried avocado, applesauce, congee, yogurt and hummus. He could eat applesauce and yogurt for every meal. We need to introduce "chunkier" textures. We've tried instant oatmeal, but he'll only eat it if i mix it into yogurt.

What else is there to try that's soft but on the way to chunky-ish?
