@Mrs. Bee: Not to mention the risk of fan death

Sorry, no advice here, we have the opposite problem.

Our old building was radiator heat, and it got so unbearably hot that we slept with the window open all night. It sounds crazy since we're talking December in Chicago with a newborn, but it ended up being the perfect temperature.

When I lived in NYC I had to have a window cracked all winter-- our heat was pretty much On or Off, not high or low. And it took forever to start back on if you turned it off, so we would just open the window as needed. So wasteful :(

@Mrs. Bee: I read a long time ago that the fan issue is because it creates an effect like a convection oven and opening the window plus running the fan helps to circulate cooler air.

Just open the window. That's what we do- our LOs room is usually around 80 unless we keep a window open a bit...just a 2- inch crack gets the temp down to 75 or so...

I used to live in a brownstone in NYC on the top floor...I was able to turn the radiator off using a big wrench and I always had the window open, from the top, not the bottom.

That apartment was sweltering! I am wondering if there is a way you can check out the furnace, to see what the turn on situation looks like.

@Mrs. Bee: I definitely think it would be ok! I've done it myself in the past, especially when I had windows directly over our radiators--I felt like they helped cancel each other out :)

Can you have a fan in the doorway like pointing out of the room, kind of pulling the warm air out of her room and instead moving it into the hallway/rest of the apartment?

@mrs. bird: @Freckles: that's what we've been doing but her room was still 80 degrees last night. some nights it's so warm i leave a window open in the living room and it keeps her room at 75 degrees.

but the problem with that is that she wakes up early because our apt gets a ton of light (her room is almost pitch black with black out shades).

leaving a fan on to circulate the cooler air isn't a bad idea though!

@Mrs. Bee: ah ok, I've always had knobs either on the outside or inside where I could turn it off (usualy because the heat was SO LOUD). I guess I"m more thinking about circulating the warm air so it feels less stuffy in there. Otherwise, I guess maybe crack the window a teeny bit? And then what if you pointed a fan at the window? That might help move cool air around the fan into the rest of the room. I know it probably seems crazy to consider opening the window when it's 10 degrees outside!

We used oscillating tower fans in the kids rooms last year. Just positioned them so it circulated air vs. blowing right on the crib. We are having ceiling fans installed soon though.

Can you leave the door open at least partially to let air escape too? Maybe with some extra white noise to compensate?

I set up an oscillating fan in M's room this winter because it gets so hot in there! It seems like the colder it gets outside, the more our heat runs and the hotter it gets in M's room. DH and I are bundled under blankets watching TV and it's 80 degrees upstairs.

@lilyann: @hilsy85: i've read that fans actually increase the temp in a room. i guess they can cool you off if they're blowing directly on you, but i don't like that esp when they are sick.

i don't think we can shut off the heat -- there are no knobs for anything! just comes out through a grate in the wall.

Hmm a fan for air circulation? A cool mist humidifier might help cool it a teeny bit. Do you have the option to just turn the radiator off?

We have this issue too to some extent--I can't turn on the heat in LO's bedroom at all because otherwise it quickly overheats, so we just keep the heat off in there completely and bundle him up.

Our apartment is heated by radiator heat like many apartments in New York, and we can't control the heat level.

Olive's room is teeny tiny and the temp fluctuates from 68 degrees when it's like 5 degrees or less outside, to 81 degrees when it's 30+ degrees outside. Her room is by far the warmest room in the house, but not sure what to do about it!

We don't have ac in the room and it seems crazy to run an ac anyway when it's 30 degrees or less outside.

Any ideas on how to keep her room cooler? Last night she slept in a short sleeve onesie and some crop leggings, and she was still too warm, but sometimes the temp drops in the early mornings so I don't just want to keep her in just a short sleeve onesie and nothing else.
