I would suggest an evenflo symphony. It can go from birth through until they're ready to sit without a booster. The lobster claw latch & sliding straps would make it easy to change it for your son & cousins. And it's pretty reasonable for a seat that can last through so many stages

Don't get the Frontier --it's FF only. The Radian would work but it's expensive and heavy heavy. The Graco @loveisstrange mentioned would be a good choice.

@hotchildinthecity: For that, Id definitely recommend the Graco one I mentioned. It's over $100 cheaper than the Britax. It works until 40lbs RFing and 70lbs FFing, so it will last a long time. If it's not going to be used a ton, there's no sense spending a lot when you can spend less on a great seat. We have one and I 100% love it. Its not super heavy (I wore it on my back in the airport), it's easy to install, and it's easy to adjust.

@loveisstrange: yes, i believe it was the evenflo tribute. Budget really isnt a huge issue but i know she doesnt want to drop like $300.
@Mamaof2: he was 20 lbs in april so i imagine he will be that heavy when he comes home.

ditto on the Britax Frontier - I am not familiar with other models but this one has a 9 yr life span so she wont need to purchase another seat down the road

He will need to be 25lbs though for the Frontier

The only one Target sells for that price point seems to be the Evenflo Tribute... which isn't a bad seat. But yeah, she needs a convertible seat. She doesnt have to spend a lot, you can get several really good ones for under $150 (including the Graco Headwise/Size4Me/My Size, which is great and a highly recommended seat).

@avivoca: it will not be often since they live three hours away. Like a handful of times a year. So i think one that goes up to a high weight limit and converts to a booster is key.

She can get a "five point harness" car seat. Like the Britax frontier or diono radian. It's pretty much a convertible with a 5 point harness but converts to a booster that uses the car's seat belt when the child is old enough (5?).

Definitely a convertible car seat that will Rear Face.

Cheap doesn't mean bad in car seat world, it just depends on the features and ease of install.

Definitely a convertible seat! How often will your mom be driving him around? She may want to get one with a higher weight limit.

Convertible car seat! My almost 2 year old (around 26-28 lbs) is in a convertible britax that we just turned forward facing.

We will have to get a booster at some point but we foresee him staying in this chair for a while as it goes up to 50 lbs or so. Found this online:

I know pretty much zip about car seats, since we dont own a car or really drive. We registered for the diono radian to use for car rentals, vacations, etc.

My mom has been buying stuff that she hopes to use for my son (who will be two when he arrives) and my sister's future hypothetical baby.

She got a great deal on this stroller that has a detachable infant car seat. It will be way too small for my son. I think what she needs is a convertible car seat that goes from toddler to booster seat. She saw one at target for $40 but i feel woefully uneducated on this subject. Help?
