@MountainBaby: if they won't let you just exchange for the long sleeved. I would just exchange for short in the next size up. That wouldn't cost anything.

@MountainBaby: there are a few versions if carters. Target has one line, Kohls another. The stores won't take each others stuff which I found annoying after my shower.

I'd skip dresses until your baby is walking. They trip on them when crawling and they are a pain to buckle around for car seats and strollers.

We pretty much did sleepers at night and long sleeve onesies with soft pants during the day. We have a few knit jumpers that we used when we had guests. I found their button crotches to be a pain otherwise.

I'd grab a couple cardigans and some zutano booties to add to your list.

@MountainBaby: Carters is pretty good about returns without a receipt, however they will give you the lowest price that the item has sold for, so you may not get much if the item goes to clearance. You can always ask how much they'll give you before returning though. FWIW, it's probably better to try to return sooner so that if it's a recent item, it hasn't had a chance to hit their sale section.

Thanks for all the input! This helps a lot. My plan is to scour the BST groups and garage sales for the next month and see what I can find, then whatever is missing I can get at the store closer to D-Day.

Does anyone know what the exchange policy is at carters without a gift receipt? I was give a 5 pack of short sleeve onesies that still have the tags and everything. I'm thinking I might try to exchange them for a multi-pack of long sleeve ones.

DD was a fall baby before a brutal winter. We were huge fans of footed sleepers with a onesie underneath and, as she got into the 3 month plus range, onesie and pants.

Because she measured big, we skipped nb. I regret it because she had growth issues was swimming in her 0-3 until 2 months, and fit the 1-2 nb pieces easily for that long.

We probably had 12-15 sleepers and a bunch of onesies. I found this to be a great amount. Mostly hand me downs or bought used for cheap (ebay, consignment sales, thrift). In my experience, used clothes for under 6 months tends to be dirt cheap and excellent quality.

I would get more pants (ones with feet are awesome) and sweaters/ sweatshirts in the 0-3 month size and just layer over the short sleeve onesies, plus zip up sleepers, hats, and socks. I got way less clothes for my second baby since we tend to do a load of laundry every other day in my house any way and it wouldn't bother me to run a load every day (DD likes to put clothes in the washer and dryer so I count laundry as toddler activity rather than chore).

Agree with @katsupgirl: that you don't need to buy a whole lot of NB! My daughter wore that size for a week or two since she went from 8 lb 3 oz when we left the hospital to over 9 lbs after a week (and I have a few friends whose babies could never fir that size at all). You can get 2 day delivery from Amazon and they have a ton of baby clothes if you feel like you need more.

I would get some more NB sleepers, especially if you have a smaller baby. I liked having a bunch this time because my daughter spits up SO much more than her sister. Also some NB long sleeved onesies and pants. And a fleece jacket. Babies can get cold easier than we do. Perhaps some socks and booties.

I was expecting a bigger baby, I ended up having to send my husband out to get some sleepers in smaller sizes!

I personally didn't even bother dressing my son in outfits, but I did change him every day...he'd get a bath at night and get a fresh sleeper. When he stretched his first morning wake time past an hour, I began changing him out of his nightime sleeper to a day sleeper.

My late-November baby lived in short-sleeved onesies under sleep n plays. I originally thought he could start in 0-3 months but he was swimming in them and we had to go to the mall at 4 days postpartum to stock up on NB onesies and sleep n plays. We only lasted a month in NB but in that month we couldn't keep up with the laundry fast enough. I think you should get more than you think you need and keep the tags on if you're afraid of not needing them.

P.S. Zippers on everything!!

If you are measuring ahead I would focus on 0-3. NB clothes didn't last long for my big baby. If you don't mind the look of baby girl kind of swimming in clothes right at the beginning.
Definitely more pants (footed) and sleepers. Do you have hats and socks?
The other determining factor is how much laundry you want to do.
Also, you can stick with what you have and do some online ordering when baby shows up. I place a lot of online orders at Carters and diapers.com.

I would get more NB for sure. My LO was 8lbs and still wore newborn for a month, and then outgrew the length. Sleepers for night and some days at home, but otherwise I like to get my LO dressed during the day. Onesie and pants. I am having a winter baby this time, so I am avoiding dresses till it is warmer cause I am not dealing with tights.

For our Dec baby, I am concentrating entirely on long sleeve onesies and sleepers, so I'd get a bunch more of those. I think I am going to try to have maybe 10 each in the 0-3 size (maybe 5 in the newborn size since they grow out of that so fast). Also a few pairs of thick socks, some hats and mittens (both in lightweight and thick, the light mittens mostly so he doesn't scratch himself), bunting, and heavy swaddles for nighttime.

I know from past experience that I absolutely hate putting little babies in little outfits (pants, sweaters, etc) so I'm avoiding those this time, but some people love to dress up babies so you never know. I'm 100% certain that we will get enough of those from relatives to get us through the holidays so I am not going to buy any myself. (MIL already bought us one little outfit with a shirt and overalls and both DH and I took one look at it and said "wow that will be a pain to get on" lol).

I agree that the sleepers were key unless we were going somewhere. But if we were in the house or just running errands, both of my boys would be in a long sleeve sleeper because it was the easiest. I'd only dress them in cute outfits if we were going to church or having visitors.

I'd want more LS onesies since you are having a winter baby. For both of my kiddos we did almost only LS from October-April as infants. Also more pants to match with the onesies, and sleepers in 3 month size. With kids in daycare (so we have to leave extra clothes there) we found about 12 outfits/size was enough, with maybe a few special occasion outfits.

As a NB, all I dressed my kids in were LS sleepers. Both of them only wore size NB for about 3 weeks though. We got by with about 6 of them since we were home all the time and had family to help with laundry.

I am expecting my first baby in December, and now that we've gotten the big things squared away (car seat/crib/etc), I started to realize I have no idea what clothes we need!

I have some things from gifts and one set of hand me downs. I have more clothes in the above 3 month sizes too, but thought I'd start just with the newborn and 0-3 month.

This is what we have now:

Newborn:
- 2 sleep and plays
- 2 sleep gowns

0-3 months:
- 24 short sleeve onesies (these are a mix of brands, some look much smaller than others, so maybe those can be used in nb stage?)
- 3 long sleeve onesies
- 2 pants
- 2 dresses
- 3 sweaters
- 2 sleep gowns

I know I need to fill out the stash. What else would you get? She will be a winter baby, but we live in a warm climate, so the coldest it will get is about 40 degrees, so heavy coats/etc aren't needed.
