@Mrs. Pickle: Ok, you won! We went with a silvery teal. I actually have a love/hate relationship with the navy in my hallway so I'm going to repaint that. I'm nearly finished with the teal...

@Mrs. Sketchbook: also in researching colors ive learned that contrasting colors (opposite on the color wheel) can go together. But if you pair green with wood it will pull out the opposite color red and make it look more redder.

@gingerbebe: mustard is a good idea. Would mustard look good in the room?

I'm thinking that the filtered light in this room is asking for a more sophisticated color, like a mustard or a grey teal. But it feels silly to do that for a playroom. Which I guess was my rationale when I attempted to split the difference with that green color.

@gingerbebe: @T.H.O.U.: so here it is on the other non sunny side of the room. The challenges:

1. Does it look good with the trim?
2. Does it look good with the tones in the rock?
3. Does it look good with the light that is available?

Also as you can see there is a little bit of paint on the rock from where it used to be painted white before we moved in! Not sure if it is even possible to get that off of there but now that I've repainted it a light color I think it looks very sloppy.

To me it looks dingy!

I like the couch too @Mrs. Sketchbook: I was just trying to match the rug. Maybe keep the couch as-is and get a fun mustard color rug?? That would make a big pop.

Its hard with paint colors - you gotta keep swatching with samples. We had to swatch for 2 days with my painter and I thought I wanted gray tones but with the lighting in our house, it literally looked like cement prison cells. That's how we got to our Grecian Ivory - it was so soft and nice in the light. I think sunlight in that big sunny room is going to be the biggest factor and all your colors will look lighter. You might try something a deeper color that seems totally too dark and see how it feels.

@T.H.O.U.: So this room is a north facing room. I really need to put pictures up of the other side of the room, which is always shrouded in shadows. It is like, one half super bright, one half super dark. I started painting on the side that is super dark because that is my "problem" side. And the grey looks dingy and sort of dirty and a little institutional. I'm looking around online and apparently north facing rooms are hard to get right. I just dunno what to do!!! I'm thinking maybe a grey green, or a grey blue.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: Ooh post pictures.

Yes when we painted our wood trim white, you could suddenly see every flaw in the wood. Before it was all disguised by the dark wood color and shadows of the lines. A little bit of wood putty/caulk whatever and then painting over it worked like a charm.

@gingerbebe: I like the rug but I couldn't bear to slipcover that couch! :silly: For real though, that's my Don Draper couch haha.

I started painting the room a light beige grey.

http://www.behr.com/consumer/ColorDetailView/PPU18-9

Right now it looks stark white as it dries and I really dislike it. It seems to show every flaw in the paneling and in the trim (since the trim is natural wood I can only paint right up to it). Hoping it dries a little darker...

This is a big pretty cheap rug that you can put down (and it would tie your blue color palette in the house together).

That, plus creamy walls and maybe a neutral taupe/gray slipcover for the couch?

@Mrs. Sketchbook: We're facing the same thing with our windows! We planned to replace them all this year (and really...why did anyone ever think brown was a good color for window casings???), but then our washer leaked and we had to replace flooring, so it looks like windows are put off until next year.

One of the sliders had started pulling away from the wall, so we HAD to replace those. I was worried about getting white when we weren't replacing everything at the same time, but we don't really notice it inside, and outside, it's just the back of the house. And it looks SO much better on the inside!

@MaryM: I think eventually we will paint it all, but it is kinda a mess because there's also a built in desk and a built in fireplace that are the same thing, plus this massive doorway that is ALSO in the same trim. The original house is rock so to put in this addition they had to cut into the rock so the doorway between this and the actual house is like, a foot thick. Hard to explain! I just don't know if I am ready to commit to painting all of that, because we are eventually going to turn it into a master bedroom, so this is not a forever solution. Maybe I could do the windows? They need to be replaced in all honesty....everything in our house needs to be replaced! Haha.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: I hate random DIY projects previous owners undertake - its so annoying! Yeah, I'd just get like a big area rug and cover up the carpet. If you got like a big bold geometric print or something, it might be fun and modernize the space a bit.

@gingerbebe: the crazy thing about this area is that when we bought it, it was half hardwood, half nothing. We took up a big piece of carpet expecting a full hardwood floor, but it actually just ended in the middle of the room. I guess they added on to this area twice I'm assuming, because it makes zero sense! So we are stuck in a middle area where we want to preserve the original hardwood, but don't have the $$ right now to do the full room, because it is a huge room. I didn't even post the other part of the room, it is about twice as big as the pics I posted but you can't really see the trim on that side of the room because there are no windows.

Also, if you go with white, I would do a warm white - think like a rich vanilla ice cream. I'd add very bright colored bunting or wall decorations to make it pop.

I would go white honestly, or another really light color! I think it will brighten the room up a ton, and even make the carpet look lighter that way.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: For me, the bigger issue is the flooring. The carpet is really dark and muddy and with the gold toe guard, it makes it look extra dated. I would maybe brighten up the floor with a big area rug or replace the carpet with something else. I do think the trim would look better with a white/light color (we love SW Grecian Ivory in our house, which is more like a light beige color) and I also agree a contrast color on the ceiling would be nice - something in the blue family would be calming and match the rest of your house in terms of palette. I think with the very green lush backyard, the green of the room is too much green.

What about continuing navy in from the hallway? White also sounds good!

Have you seen the YHL room with basically white walls but a color on the ceiling? What about something like that?
