We use undershirts for preschool (I think we just got the pack of Hanes undershirts), where they prefer not to have onesies even for non-toilet-trained toddlers, so they can do the diaper changes more quickly. After onesies, we just used shirts and bottoms. Once, DS was pulling up regularly and then walking there was no exposed skin. I have never used an undershirt on my son. But we do live in the south and he is warm natured.
