Oh we change our DS anywhere flat. Couch, bed, floor etc. unless it's poop. That we still change at the changing pad where all the supplies are.

Used the changing pad for just about every change until she potty trained at 2.5. That way if it was messy it was contained to that one area. She got used to it and MUCH less squirmy.

I still use it at 1 year. She does try to squirm off but I can usually get her under control by giving her something she is not supposed to have (like tube of lotion or baby clothes hanger). It is 10x worse to try and change her on the floor because she will get away. I will get the clothes and diaper off of her standing but I can't get the diaper on without laying her down.

Seriously? I buy diapers a size up and change less often (fortunately DD doesn't rash easily). :)

As others said, I try to distract my little ninja with toys or my phone, check the contents of the diaper before changing, and have a handful of wipes ready. I often allow her one fake "escape" once her bum is clean before getting a new one on her in crawling/standing position. We change on the floor exclusively, and have been for a looooong time now - a changing table wouldn't have worked from about 4 months (rolling) onward.

He is 2 and we still use the changing pad on the dresser upstairs. Downstairs we just use a portable changing mat for poop or just plop him on the floor for pee. It had been a wrestling match for a long time to change him but now he doesn't like the feeling of the dirty diaper so he has gotten easier as long as you're quick.

@twodoghouse: THIS. It's hard on the pad (which we have on a dresser) if he's squirmy, but it's worse on the floor where he can escape! He's 17 months, by the way.

My LOs are crazy on the changing pad, but doing it on the floor is worse because they think they can just get up and run away. I keep a bunch of fun toys up there that they only get on the changing table. I also give them my phone if I get desperate. That one is a surefire way to get them to lay back and calm down! After the initial wipe down I sometimes let them stand up and look at themselves in the mirror above the table while I get a new diaper and their pants on, but it's tricky that way and I've gotten peed on...a lot!
