@agold: Aw, thanks! She's 3.5. I'm sorry you had to deal with all of that; it's so hard. It took four tries to get her blood last time! They are going to want to take it again at some point to make sure her liver enzymes are returning to normal, and I dread it.

@Iced Tea: Omg! Who would have thought. Did she have to breathe into all the tubes? Glad you have some answer! My GI doc says that GI pain can show up anywhere.. and coincidentally I have to pee a lot when I get cramps either from GI problems or from my period, etc. I hope she will be better very soon. Fingers crossed.

@Iced Tea: I am sooooo sorry you are going through this. I have no advice but I just want to reach through the internet and give you a hug. How old is your daughter? My just-over-2-year-old currently has a UTI. Symptoms were throwing up and a rapidly rising, really high fever (got to 105.5!). The ER experience was traumatic (blood draws, catheter, intramuscual shots in oil, etc.). I still can't stop crying over it all and I am feeling so much pain for all the moms who have sick kids. I am praying your daughter recovers and has nothing too serious going on. Please keep us updated.

So, her blood tests indicated that she has never had strep! I was so surprised.

The only thing is that her liver enzymes were a bit high. So we were referred to GI.

At the GI appointment the doctor said it could indicate her way of responding to H. Pylori, so they tested her for that, and it was positive. Next we treat the H. Pylori infection and hope that her problems resolve. If not, we will have to do further testing.

I was very relieved that the test for it is non-invasive! She was so scared of having blood drawn again, but they didn't need to do that today.

@dc yoga bee: Omg.. another thing I will now be paranoid about!! If the redness went away, that does *sound* like a YI. I hope it is, so she doesn't need any more abx. Fingers crossed for you and her!

@dc yoga bee: thanks, we are testing for that right now at the doctor’s office. Right now we are pursuing the possibility of a poststrep autoimmune condition. Will update if we learn anything further.

DD has been having symptoms of UTI with painful burning when she goes to bathroom and some slight redness. Culture came back negative for UTI. She had perianal strep. Blew my mind! Did the 10 days antibiotics and still says it hurts and no redness. I nothiced some slight discharge. Complains of itch to high heavens. Took her back and now they’re saying it’s yeast which is kind of uncommon for a three year old but probably caused by the antibiotics. Doctor told me to try monistat for four days and if that doesn’t work we will move onto blood samples and stronger oral antibiotics.

@Mrs. Carrot: That’s one of the things we were trying to test for but couldn’t get enough blood. The attempts to get blood have been traumatic. The doc does think it’s a remote possibility at this point.

@Iced Tea: Has she been tested for anything autoimmune? Zero expertise here, but the joints and fever/temp shifts sounds like there might be some kind of inflammation than may be general rather than specific. At this point I'd ask the PCP to throw everything on the table and test for all the things. I'm so sorry you're going through this, I hope they find an answer for you soon.

Just wanted to update a bit. She’s on her second episode since I made this post. That makes at least six episodes total so far. We have not seen the urologist yet! I did ask our PCP to check on the diabetes; looks like it isn’t that. Today she vomited, but I don’t know if it is related or not. Her symptoms and fever keep her out of preschool, which is really disruptive for us. I’m getting pretty frustrated by the uncertainty.

There are a number of possibilities. In adults, they automatically assume, if not a complex UTI, it must be a STD; however, with young children, physicians need to explore outside of the box. It could be viral rather than bacterial , therefore, their tests would not pick up on a bacterial UTI. Perhaps, a severe allergy to soaps or detergents that only affects your daughter's "sensitive areas" (lower mucus membranes) but so much so it is a catalyst for other symptoms. They can even cause back pain.
More ideas: A recurrent kidney infection?
Maybe it is a fungal infection ... Bacterial tests would never pick up a fungal infection. Also, although fairly rare in children, it may be interstitial cystitis which mimics UTI. Another two possibilities are pyelonephritis & diabetes.

It sounds a lot like the painful bladder condition that I have/had- IC. The urologist diagnosed me by putting saline solution in my bladder- a normal person could not feel it but it’s very painful with IC. I have another friend with this condition on HB and she told me that pregnancy and childbirth cured it for her. It sounded too good to be true but the same thing happened to me. After a lifetime of pain in my bladder nothing for almost 4 years. I’m sorry you are dealing with this.

@Iced Tea: My daughter one time had all the symptoms of a UTI and it ended up that she had strep throat! The only reason we figured it out is because her awesome doctor said strep had been going around and had urinary symptoms for some kids. It was so weird. She never had a sore throat but her symptoms cleared right up with treatment.

That was very unusual obviously. A less unusual reason could be dehydration. I have UTI-like symptoms when I’m dehydrated.

I would definietly see a pediatric urologist. I am a pelvic floor PT and while I don’t treat children, I see these symptoms frequently in adults where they have symptoms of UTIs but the cultures come back negative. Usually there is an underlying issue, such as pelvic floor muscles spasms, constipation or even interstitial cystitis, though I’m not sure how common IC is in children. The only thing that is throwing me is the low grade fever. I would cut out the foods on this list and see if it helps. I’m sorry she’s struggling so much.

Have they run any blood tests? My thought with increased urination (although I don’t know if it would link with painful urination) and joint pain and just general unwellness would be diabetes. I think reoccurring infections like UTIs can lead to a type of reactive arthritis that would cause joint pain but that is very uncommon in children (my elderly father had an issue with this years ago). I’m sorry to hear she’s been feeling unwell - I hope the specialist can pinpoint something.

My daughter has this recurrent issue where she has the symptoms of a UTI, but the tests and cultures always turn up negative. Any ideas?

She has a low-grade fever off and on. Urinary urgency, urinary frequency, sometimes painful urination and accidents. She complains of back or side pain at times. For a while she also complained of joint pain (most often knees). She clearly feels bad some days, barely playing and saying she feels tired and cold. This went on for about a month earlier this year, and now it's back.

We've had rapid urine tests, urine cultures, urine calcium test, kidney ultrasound, and abdominal x-ray. We are probably going to visit a pediatric urologist next. Does anyone have any insight?
