To me, an easy baby is one that lets you know what they want, by showing cues for hunger or tiredness.

Ditto what @Rubies said. I would also add that I think easy babies will let anyone hold them. They are mostly content with whatever they are doing/you do to them.

I think a baby who falls asleep on their own is at least partly an easy baby. LO sleeps well most nights, but will not fall asleep on her own - she will just scream at the top of her lungs if put down. She also really needs to be held most of the day while awake. She does eat well but has bad gas pains, and is colicky; although slowly but surely that is getting better. I don't think she's a "difficult" baby, but she is definitely not an easy baby either. Daycare is going to earn every cent we pay them!

LO does LOVE people, loves to smile and interact with people, loves to see and interact with the world around her, and has a very sweet personality. Once we get her gas and colic issues under control, I think she will be a pretty easy baby.

@chopsuey119: @mrs. Wagon the windi? :-)

I think our lo is a good baby. She has never been really fussy except during her 6 week growth spurt. She let's anyone hold her and is usually happy to fall asleep on her own if I put her in her bassinet while she is still awake. Sure we had feeding issues but that doesn't change my mind about how easy she is. We think this means she'll be a terror as a teen. :-\

Nobody has ever mentioned our daughter is an easy baby. She doesn't like to sleep without nursing and she caught a cold often from six months to a year. I don't have the heart to call her not easy, because to me her sparkling personality, friendliness, and predictable tantrums don't put her in the difficult baby cAtegory. I tend to be a glass is half full person though. However, i admit sleep is king in this defining category.

I would say my very difficult baby, is now a very easy toddler. Things that make him easy - We can take him out to restaurants and he doesn't scream. He will go out and do activities with us (Disneyland) and doesn't have a break down (even without full naps or schedule). We can keep him up past his bedtime and he will stay happy. We do suffer more at home with night wakings. But others don't see that.

The things he doesn't do - He doesn't sleep. As an infant, he screamed constantly from stomach pains.

I always say my kids were easy babies because both of them were healthy with generally happy, easygoing personalities. However, DD was a much better sleeper than DS, although he doesn't get as bothered by things like lack of sleep and pain from teething. So even though DD slept in longer stretches at an earlier age, DS is happy even after being up for hours at a time and he hardly ever seems grumpy about teething.

Lo was an easy baby.
She ate and slept well, didn't fuss, never cried.

Have you tried the gas remover thing from the makers of nose Frieda? I forget what it's called, but @mrbee started a thread about it a while back..

I think all the things you mentioned. People were always telling us that LO was easy but that's only because he is the smiliest kid ever. They didn't know that it took 2 months to get him to nurse well and 6 months to get an occasional 6 hour stretch of sleep. He does have an easy temperament but I don't think he was an easy baby if you know what I mean.

Looking back, I consider Wagon Jr. An easy baby because he nursed well, slept thru the night at 4 months (and slept well for naps too) and didn't require constant holding or attention.

I'm trying to figure out if Lil Miss Wagon is another easy baby. She's great with nursing so far, but doesn't sleep for very long stretches of time, skips naps between feedings sometimes, and is pretty fussy due to gas, I think. But sometimes we can put her down in her bassinet and as long as she's full, has a clean diaper and isn't too gassy, she'll fall asleep on her own.

What qualities do you think constitute an easy baby?
