I tried everything under the seat when it was rear facing, a rolled towel, a pool noodle but with the big base and angle of the seat, it's more secure facing forward (which I feel so guilty about). I didn't notice the base on ours being exceptionally large (we have a Rav4, so not a huge SUV, but not a tiny compact car either). It looked to be about the same size as all of the Britax car seats but we liked that it had the additional air pockets that were removable when LO gets too big. </p> <p>We also have goofy car seat laws in Australia, babies only have to be rear facing until 6 months, so most convertible seats are used in the forward position here.
