I say she is. I declared her able to sit when I could take my hand away and she didn't immediately fall over.

I feel like these distinctions are not that important :) If anyone asks if your LO is sitting up just say-- sure, if I put her that way. But only for a minute or two so far. It's all just a skill that gets progressively better and better.

They won't get into a sitting position themselves until later so it's fine to put them into that sitting position and count it. But I wouldn't count them as "sitting on their own" unless they can sit until they're ready to get down (at which point they'll fall back on purpose or dive forward). So sitting unassisted for long periods of time- 5 min or more?

Mine would sit briefly but always end up falling sideways or backwards and then one day at 6 mo she just sat on her own for 20m and never looked back. She didn't figure out how to get into sitting on her own until well after was crawling- around 9 mo for getting into sitting position on her own(and she army crawled at 7mo and regular crawled at 9.5 mo). She was pulling up onto stuff when she figured out how to get into a sitting position.

@regberadaisy: Not yet! Sometimes she gets up on her knees, but not often or for long.

I think that counts as sitting! They don't get into the sitting position themselves until around the time they start crawling and pulling up on stuff. for the longest time, lo could get from sitting to her tummy but not vice versa

@pui: No, just not needing anything behind LO such as a boppy ect . I would say when I could comfortably walk away when LO was sitting without the fear of her hurting herself would be "officially" sitting.

I think if she can remain sitting up unassisted without you holding, a boppy, bumbo, her arms, etc then it counts. A minute is pretty long imo!

Has she done the tripod yet? I love the tripod! :)

No, she doesn't need to be able to get into that position on her own. They don't do that until much later. Around when they start to crawl. I would consider being able to sit by herself for a minute being able to sit up. Or at least starting to sit up.

We considered sitting up to be when he could sit there and us not have to hover constantly - we still had a pillow or blanket behind him if he was on hardwood, but we could count on him sitting up for 5 minutes +.

Sounds like L is getting close!

@LuLu Mom: by unassisted do you mean getting up to the position on her own? I don't hold her up when she's sitting straight.

I think she's making great progress, but for me to 'record" sitting up it would have to be unassisted for an extended period of time.

My daughter (5 months) can actually sit up with a straight back for about a minute at the longest. She seems to have the strength, but her balance is not great yet. She'll jerk in one direction and end up on her side, although she is getting better at holding the position everyday. She can't yet get in to a sitting position herself, I sit her up.

Does the time she sits up count as sitting on her own, even though it's for short periods?
