He was waking from naps cranky... he had a few random no nap days and made it through without any fussiness! So we decided to drop it and he went down earlier at night and went back to sleep 12/3 hours.

I'm so interested in all this, because my 17 month old has never really napped more than 1.5 hours, dropped her second nap very early (maybe 12 months? daycare pushed for one nap though). She refused her nap on Sunday and was pretty much fine until 2 hours before bed. Do naps get better as they get older?

My son stopped nearly cold turkey at 3.5 because when he switched daycares, his new class was no longer napping. It went ok and we still did/do weekend naps. He's now 5 and almost always takes a nap on the weekend at least one day if not both.

We are going through this right now too.

Some days DS1 goes down with no problem....will sleep for 2-3 hours. Other days, he lays in bed singing and doesn't go to sleep. Rarely, we get a complete "I don't wanna" meltdown. It's tough to know what we're going to get on a day to day basis.

It took about 6 months of transition time. During his quiet time, he'd take naps some days, and not on others. When he did nap, he wouldn't fall asleep for bedtime until 9 or later, and he always wakes at the same time every day. When he didn't nap, he'd be crashing by 5 or so, but we'd have to push him to get to 7. Which means during those 6 months he never really got enough sleep. The cumulative lack of sleep was starting to take a toll, and naps were hurting more than helping. So, at 3 and a few months, we pulled the plug-- no more naps. We moved bedtime to 6:30, and he finally got his full 11-12 hours in a 24 hour period. After a few weeks he adjusted. Bedtime became much easier because he was ready, and he slept better overnight, too.

Nap somedays and no nap other days. Eventually I just stopped trying because it meant she could go to bed 1.5-2 hours earlier so that's better for me anyway since DH isn't home for bedtime. LOL.

I can't remember the specifics but it was more like no nap some days and nap other days and then I just decided the fight wasn't worth it! It turns out though that I could have made her bedtime earlier than I did (and I did make it a little earlier) so I recently changed bedtime and we get more night hours. Good luck!

No nap for 2 days then nap for 2.5. Then no nap for a day, nap for 2 hours. No nap for 2 days, nap for 3 hours. Then we switched to a bed and that was that. He stopped napping at 34 mos.

For the last month before dropping completely, most days she would go in and just jump around and talk to herself, say "I'm not sleepy", things like that. I'd get a nap here and there but eventually realized it wasn't going to happen anymore. This was in November a few weeks before turning 3.

M's transition to no nap took over 6 months....started around 2.5, we would have some days of no nap...as she got closer to 3, she was not napping more than she napped during the week. Now, she rarely naps, except on some weekends when we have a lot going on.

DD1 is 3 and still naps most days. She completely skipped it yesterday with a huge fight and then today has been sleeping for almost 3 hours after going down easily! So I have no idea what it will look like when she's over it: skipping on the daily or cutting down to a shorter nap before she's done.
