@PawPrints: I just went back and looked at my 4 month regression posts to make sure I had this right. Like others, G was not a good sleeper before or after, but I do remember this period as particularly trying. We spent a lot of time in MOTN wake ups "partying", meaning that she just wanted to play for hours on end. It was exhausting. We were also eliminating dairy for her MSPI at the same time, so it is hard to tell what caused the misery. But it did eventually get easier.

I hope it ends for you soon!!

C was never a great sleeper but 4 months is actually when it started getting a little better. Months 2.5-3.5 were the hardest of my life I think. We ended up sleep training at 3.5 months because we could not get her to sleep no matter what we did. I was bracing for a 4 month regression but it didn't seem to get worse then.

Unfortunately sleep is still our biggest issue. :bummed:

I said it was nothing major because my son had colic and reflux for the first for five months of his life. So basically we had been used to not sleeping for a very very long time. But I do recall that somewhere in the 4-5 month range he had a new pretty consistent thing where he woke up at 5 o'clock in the morning and wanted to screech and holler and thump in his crib for at least an hour. We usually left him alone unless he started to cry really hard because he has this thing even now where if he wakes up after 430 in the morning he will not go back down to sleep. So we just let him work it out even though we were obviously awake in the other room listening to him and 50% of the time he would go back to sleep for another hour or two for his actual wake time at 7:30. Part of me wonders if he actually had his regression early at around 10 weeks because there was a period of time there for about two weeks where my son didn't sleep for more than 30 minutes at a time and I didn't sleep for 10 days straight one time and I had a nervous breakdown. My pediatrician tells me that the 10 week thing was his colic peeking but whatever it was, I almost died.

He was a great sleeper until 3.5 months and then he just started waking constantly. 4-5 times a night and needing to be held. Miserable. He never slept well again after that until we sleep trained at 9 months

LO slept through the night from 3-4 months, then the whole thing when to complete sh*t. :bummed: He started waking up more and more frequently and gradually got more and more difficult to put to sleep. We did some sleep training around 6 months for bed time (which was pretty easy - minimal crying, I think he just needed to be left alone to fall asleep) but he kept waking up 2-3 times a night until about 11 months. His naps were always crap, so at least they didn't get worse :silly: It was a long haul, but things are definitely better now. He sleeps through the night (but he wakes up at 5:30)... I think he just isn't a sleeper.

Months 4-6 were awful: LO went from sleeping 5-6 hour stretches, with usually 1 wakeup per night to 2-5 wakeups each night and a max sleep stretch for 3 hours. And just when I was about to lose my mind, she started sleeping again at exactly 6 months.

Never noticed it. She wasn't STTN before either, but not much has changed since the newborn days. My pediatrician said he didn't believe in a 4 month sleep regression and that what really throws off sleep is teething. Then later that day or the next day I also read an article by someone who doesn't believe in teething either, so...??? So, you may not have the regression, or you may experience bad sleep patterns at a different point, or not at all but I guess all you can do it try to remind yourself that it will pass eventually!

Pretty much the hardest thing I've gone through in my life. She went from "normal" newborn sleep (not a great sleeper, but not horrible, maybe up 3x per night with a 4-5 hr long stretch) to waking 8-10x every single night. The long stretch would be 2 hrs max. DH and I had to take shifts (8-12, 12-4, 4-8) in order to get any sleep at all because she would be up so often. She was also super cranky all the time because she wasn't sleeping well (as were we). I was just getting back to work and basically useless.

We sleep trained at around 5.5 months and it worked really well. She went back to "normal" sleep (waking 2-3x per night to nurse) and has been a good sleeper ever since. The whole thing lasted maybe 6 weeks.

As my LO gets older, I have a lot more peace about sleep disturbances. She usually has them during a period of development (learning to walk, etc.) and then once she has mastered the skill, her sleep regulates again. She's had a few of these sleep regressions, but within a week everything is back to normal. Good luck!

We had a couple of rough nights out of the blue - waking up multiple times per night, sometimes to eat, sometimes for unclear reasons. She had already transitioned to crib and out of swaddles by about 3.5 months and had been doing fine STTN. And then suddenly these weird wake ups. But after a few days she was back to normal, sleeping 9-10 hours without wake ups. Getting her to sleep is still somewhat harder esp now that she rolls- sometimes will end up on her tummy and needs to be flipped back over to settle down and sleep. Still, overall, it's been no big deal.

Eh she was 4 months almost to the day when we transitioned her from the RNP to the crib and swaddle weaned at the same time. It was rough for abor 2.5 weeks. She went from taking 2 two hour naps to 3 30-45 minute naps which is not fun. Sometimes she surprises us and naps longer. I associate it more with change than a regression. We were also traveling for a week during that tough point and she was in a PNP which I'm sure did not help.

Right at 4 months we went from almost STTN to up every 2-3 hours. But it was every other night. I think LO knew we couldn't handle every night like that again! After 2 weeks it disappeared as mysteriously as it started.

DS was never a great sleeper early on thanks to reflux. However, the biggest noticeable change during the 4mo regression was that we'd rock him to sleep at his usual "bedtime" and then after one sleep cycle (38 minutes. I will never forget that!) he'd wake up and wouldn't go back to sleep unless I nursed him back to sleep. Sometimes this would happen two or three times and I wouldn't eat dinner or have any time for basic life tasks after 7pm. Relatedly rocking him to sleep basically stopped working! Of course it was the holidays and we had him in the room with us at my in laws' house. We stuck it out for two weeks and then sleep trained (Ferber) just for going to sleep. It took 2-3 days and thankfully not much crying at all, and he has gone down awake for all naps and bedtime ever since then (11 mo now).

DS was never a great sleeper (woke numerous times a night), but when he hit regression, he woke up even more frequently. Like right when I put him down, walked to bed to lay down, he was up. *cringe*

@junebugsmama: I BF for a year, and comfort nursing while co-sleeping was how we dealt with the numerous night wakenings. It was a great thing and a bad thing. lol

Our girls were never great sleepers (waking 4x+ times a night), so I guess we didn't notice it that much... I think both girls were just awake longer during those wake ups. After about a month, it got much better.

I didn't pick one of those because we totally made it work, but his sleep completely changed. He was sleeping through the night by 6 weeks in his basinet, 8p-ish to 6a or so, eat, go back to sleep for a couple more hours either with me or in basinet. Now he cosleeps because we basically never got him to transition to crib after the regression. Even if we tried the basinet, which he weighed way over the weight limit, he would wake up over and over. That coupled with trying cosleeping on vacation which spoiled me against those late night wake ups! He would still be a little unsettled sleeping with me on and off until the last few months (he's 7m now) and I kept him swaddled cosleeping for way too long (technically a no no regardless of age when bedsharing! But he was way too into clawing his face all night long). Now I nurse him to sleep at 8 and he won't wake up until sometimes midnight or later. He doesn't really fully wake, just enough to nurse. I don't even know how many times he nurses per night but I get fantastic sleep, my supply is awesome, and he sleeps 12-13 hours nursing frequently through the second half of the night. It's like my snooze button to latch him on!

Our LO had been a great night sleeper from birth, and by a bit over 2 months she was STTN. Right after 3 months she started having a few night wakings again. Then her more wakings. Then it got harder to get her back to sleep. Then we had about a week around 4 mo where I almost couldn't put her down at all. She'd sleep 3-4 hours when I put her down but from midnight until morning she had to be held or she wouldn't sleep. Then she gradually slid back to waking up a lot but going back to sleep easily (with just a paci pop) around 5 months and we were stable for a month. Then at 6 months we went back to having to hold her all night long basically from bedtime. After a week of that I sleep trained but her sleep was still inconsistent. Now at 14 mo she is finally STTN for the last week or so. This is the first time she has done it since we all went downhill at a bit over 3 mo so.... I'm going to say that regression sucked. (or more likely... she was always meant to be a crappy sleeper but for some reason was awesome the first 3 mo)

It wasn't so much her overnight sleep, ur her naps were awful. Which meant she was SUPER fussy for all waking periods because she was overtired. It was the worst part of her first year and Dh and I were both so frustrated. I was so concerned that she was sick or something was wrong, I almost brought her to the dr. Luckily it only lasted 2 weeks then she went back to normal.

My LO will be 4 months old on Wednesday so I'm starting to grow wary of the dreaded regression. She had a horrible night on Friday night when she was wide awake from 2:45-6:00 am, which has never come close to happening before, so we got a little spooked. Saturday night and last night were both back to normal, though (sleeping roughly 7pm-7am with several wakeup/dream feeds, always goes right back to sleep immediately after feeding).

So I'm curious what to watch out for. What changes happened to your LO's sleep when the regression hit?

Poll for fun, but mostly I'd love comments. (Enabling multiple votes for multiple LOs).
