Think about not just the infant room but the rooms beyond, as well. Talk to all of the teachers, get to see all of the rooms. Make sure you're comfortable with not just the room your lo would be in now but rooms they will move up to, as well.

Things I am concerned with:
Menus
Daily Communication Sheets
Naps
Teacher Experience
Holiday Schedule
Outdoor Time - what do the kids do if they can't go outside for weeks on end because of weather? What's the playground like? Look safe? Is there shade? What's the ground cover like?
What are their policies for letting someone other than the parent pick up the child?

I didn't ask this question but it has been a real issue for a coworker with her daycare:

What emergency situations have caused your daycare to close? (Power outage, flooding)
How many times has it closed in the last year? My coworker's DCP seems like it closed for an emergency about 6 times last year.

I would also ask when the last license inspection was and what the findings were. Then check what DCP says against the official reports.

I see you already have a list but here is ours as well. And for us honestly it kind of was a gut feeling. We saw 3 options and we just knew which one was right. Good luck

What is the adult to child ration? How many kids to you care for? What are their ages?

Do you care for the same group of kids every day?

Do you tell a parent when their child has been bitten or hit by another child?

How do you communicate with parents… daily report ie: nap times/feeding time

Policy regarding sick kids? Will you administer medicine if needed?

Do we pay for days when baby is out due to SICKNESS? VACATION?

Back up care if YOU are sick?

What holiday/vacation days do YOU take? MLK? President? Yearly vacation? Do you work out back up care for those days?

How do you discipline the children?

Do you have any assistants? Who lives in the house/has contact with children? Do you smoke? Does anyone in the house smoke?

Visitation policy? Can we stop by unannounced?

Do you offer sibling discounts? Age discounts?

Describe a typical day. (activities/play areas) Do you let the kids watch TV? Where to you go for outdoor time?

Do you drive the children anywhere? Do they all have carseats?

What is your billing policy (how/when billed)? Form of payment you require? Receipts for taxes?

Release policy? Who may pick up my child…. Can we pick up early or late some days?

Food….. do we provide all snacks/meals? Do you provide any?

Do you think the baby should be held when fed?

Do you pick up the baby when she cries? What would you do if she doesn’t stop crying?

How do you get the baby settled/sleeping? Are you aware of SIDS and how baby should be laying?

Only other things I can think of is security/emergency protocols, whether they have a nurse (or a floater nurse) on staff, how do they warm the milk and are they able to store frozen milk just in case? And anything particular to your own preferences, for example if you want your DCP to have certain philosophies toward discipline or education. Ideally they won't leave you with too many questions as they should address the important things before you have to ask! Good luck!

In addition to what you mentioned, some things I would ask if I had to do it again:
- how do they handle naps: set naptimes? each childs own schedule?
- same as above for feeding. Also, are there particular ways they require you to prepare bottles? (ours has a lot of rules and it is a real pain, not a deal breaker, but would have been good to know)
- age range of children in the classroom
- what kinds of activities they do during they day
- do they take the babies outside at all
- late pick up policy
- vaccination policy
- how long the teachers have been there, how often they have teacher turnover, what experience the teachers have, and what kind of credentials/background checks they require of teachers
- what supplies they provide and what you have to provide (diapers, wipes, diaper cream, crib sheets, blanket/sleepsack, food, etc)
- names and contact info for current parents who you could speak to as a reference

Hi all -

We have our first day care tour next week (how did that happen already??) and I am trying to compile a list of questions to ask. I know to ask whether they send notes at the end of each day, what the ratio of kids to teachers is, what the sick policy is, and whether we could stop by at any time.

I know I am missing a lot of issues. What did you ask when you toured day cares??

Thank you!
