She had a grandparent's party where MIL and FIL's friends came over and we had cake.

Her nanny took her to FAO and Toys R Us in the city

We also had cake with my family. I wanted to do something big but I didn't have the energy LOL

@DillonLion: nope, I don't see why you need to host another celebration. It's not like the other side isn't invited, they simply cannot make it.

LO is getting 4 celebrations for his second birthday, lol. I didn't mean for this happen, but it is. His birthday is on a thursday and i have to put him in daycare and the daycare celebrates everyone's birthday. I will be sending them cupcakes for the celebration. That's #1

Then that night we will let open LO open the gifts from DH and I and have more cupcakes :) That's #2 (and the smallest party as it will just be the 3 of us).

Then that weekend after his bday, we are coincidentally visiting my hometown for a work related reason, so I am co-hosting a shared party for LO and his cousin who is turning 4. It will be at an indoor playground and family and some friends will be there. That's #3

Then we get back to where we live now, the following weekend, I am doing a little party for all our friends here since this is his home and where we have all our mommy friends whose bday parties we are and have been going to. That's #4

In total he will be getting a set of cupcakes (to be eaten at daycare and at home that night), and 2 cakes (one small one for hometown and one big one for current town). And balloons for the 2 bigger parties.

I feel like it is overboard, but they are all really small celebrations and each with different people in different places.

We didn't do a party for LO's second birthday. We took her to Disney World, then had cake when we got home with grandparents.

We did a very small party, just our parents/siblings, and 2 of her best friends. We just had food and cake and then people stayed and watched a football game while the kids watched a movie. Very simple.

we just did a small family BBQ for her 2nd at my parent's house and the in laws came to town for it.

I'd say celebrate w the one family over Thanksgiving. If it's gonna be a big deal w the other side that they're not there, then just do a small get together before or afterwards.

Hers was in February.
We had a bunch of our friends over and her Best friend from daycare (who's mom was a co-worker) in the community room at the school and had cake and snacks. Nothing big, but I had fun planning a Dora theme for her decorations.

@DillonLion: That's a bummer:( We actually really suck at it too, but all of our friends have kids and we all just accept that we suck at staying in touch bc life is so hectic. And then we usually manage to get together for bday parties and all catch up:)

If you are hosting Thanksgiving and think you will be up for hosting another event (I don't think I could!), then just do something small and simple - like a cake from Publix - and have a low-key little party:) Publix can even do balloons!

@PrincessBaby: we did a piss poor job of maintaining friendships this year. We dont have a lot of people to even invite! They also did not invite us to their LOs bday party this year. :(

We are going to have a party at our house...It will be a lot of our friends and their LOs, so we'll probably have a good group of 10-12 LOs aged 2-4ish and probably 20ish adults including family. We are probably going to rent a bounce house thingy or some type of entertainment for the kids and the adults can socialize and eat and enjoy cocktails and then we can have cake:)

I thought about doing it somewhere like at a little indoor play gym that you rent out for 1.5 hrs but we really like it when everyone gets together - it's so rare- and we had a real ripper of a 1st bday party that was so much fun...So I want to just have a big shindig at our house. We love getting everyone together and celebrating:)

We'll be out of town at my IL's for DS's 2nd birthday on 11/16. We decided to throw a small family party the Saturday after Thanksgiving so that out of town family could make it. It'll be pretty low key but we'll serve dinner and drinks and I'm making a cake!

@DillonLion: My LO's birthday is 5 days after yours but she will be turning 3 this year. Last year, we did a party with family two days after thanksgiving and it was all ILs basically. I then wanted a party for my friends and their babies so we invited over about 8 adults and 3 kids for pizza and brownies (super low key) the following weekend. It was relaxing but LO really enjoyed it. I think if it is easy to host (bring in food, people don't care about eating on paper plates, etc) then I would do it!

We had a monster 1 year birthday party last year at a venue, lots of guests, etc.

This year, her actual birthday falls on Thanksgiving itself, so we'll probably do a little cake on that day to celebrate.

However, we only see one part of the family on Thanksgiving and the other one has already expressed disappointment at not being able to celebrate potentially.

Should I host another party on the weekend for the other part of the family and maybe a few friends? I am hosting Thanksgiving, if that helps sway your opinion at all.
