I've only had it a couple times to the point of being painful, and four pickles helped. By the next morning everything was moving again.

@MamaMoose: I eat raisin bran with added granola religiously, I also added more oatmeal and high fiber fruits to my diet and forced myself to drink way more water than I really wanted to.
My OB at one point gave me samples of a pre natal that had a stool softener but I hated them so I realized I had to focus on my diet

@mrs. wagon: I'd heard that before which is why I was nervous that pushing to poop would be bad for the baby!! But I guess as long as your cervix is closed the baby doesn't really get effected by pushing at this point.

@MamaMoose: p.s. pushing a baby out is JUST like pushing poop out, so sometimes I get scared that I'm pushing too hard...!! but no one ever prepared me on how to push, so let me tell you now, just push like you're pooping!

I've never had a problem with constipation but after delivering Wagon Jr. I didn't have a bowel movement for something like 10 days. !!! I was so scared. Colace did nothing for me because my painkillers were constipating me. I stopped with the painkillers and pretty soon I was doing ok, but I ended up with internal hemorrhoids. The doctor told me to do miralax and benefiber, as well as prescribing a suppository to help me heal. That sucked. But after about a week I was back to normal.

@MamaMoose: Yes I did and for me it was a little different as I had a large cyst on my right ovary, she was scaerd that the extra pressure/pushing would cause it to twist or burst so there was a little added concern. Normally though it is not a problem, she had one lady go 2 1/2 weeks without a movement and everything was fine in the end.

Better to get it taken care of before that long of a wait, the stress you feel can transfer to the baby and I was feeling stressed about it for sure.

Also, it seems silly but what helped me (with the nurses's advice) is when you are trying to yell a little, for some reason it worked...of course only want to use when at home :)

I've been taking one Colace a day and let me tell you....lifesaver!!! I used to have daily constipation but not anymore! My OB said it's totally safe because it doesn't go into your blood stream or enter the placenta. He said it's basically in and out. :)

@jessiejo17: I know this is probably a silly question but did you happen to ask your doctor if there is any risk to the baby by straining to go? That's what I'm most worried about even though I know it's probably totally fine.

I have chronic stomach issues which were very severe when I was a child. I can keep the problems in check by drinking tons of water and taking Miralax every day. I took Milk of Magnesia every day from age 7 until 22, but then switched to Miralax.

Because of my existing consideration issues, I'm terrified of how pregnancy will effect it.

I only had a little constipation during the first trimester when my eating was all out of whack, so I guess my normal diet does the trick. I am mostly vegetarian. I eat a lot of fruit (minimum of 4 servings a day) and apples especially seem to help. I stay well hydrated and drink water throughout the day. I eat yogurt pretty much every day, beans a few times a week, whole grains at least 90% of the time, and of course as many vegetables as possible. I've been super regular and ready to go as soon as I drink some water or coffee after waking up.

I had sever constipation and the only things that worked for me were: cutting out most dairy, eat tons of fruit/fiber, and Miralax with an additional stool softener (my doctor recommended Durolax) and usually the next day it would happen. My OB told me you can not OD on these meds and they won't hurt the baby. I went 6 days, so I was in a lot of pain but once it got moving it was the greatest feeling ever.
