@eiko2010: I'm all about putting EVERYTHING on the registry, and then buying (maybe second hand or a cheaper version) anything that the gift-buyers don't get. I did register for the crib and mattress, and my Mom got it.

We put everything on our registry. One of our registries gives you a 10% cash back reward (so everything purchased off your registry gives you 10% of the value back to spend on other items at the store). Whatever we don't get at our shower (this weekend), we'll buy using the registry completion coupons and the rewards points.

I recommend putting everything on the registry, especially if you know for sure you're having a shower! I've been to showers before where the parents to be barely registered for anything and it's kind of frustrating to guests who just want to buy something at a certain price point and be done with it. Plus, what do you buy for someone whos registry is cleaned out after two days? Diapers probably!

We put everything on our registry too!! Whatever we didn't get we used our 10% completion discount or bought used from craigslist, garagesales etc

However, if I found a really good deal on something prior to my shower, I would pick it up.

I bought 90% of his clothes secondhand.

I would put it all on your registry but start keeping an eye out for deals on used and then alter your registry as you go. Example: register for a bumbo and then if you find one for $15 on craigslist buy it an edit the list. It's not like someone will look at your registry and say "She isn't registered for a bumbo? I'm so not buying her anything then!" They'll find something else to buy you and then you can cross 2 things off your list. :)

I put everything on the registry and bought stuff after our baby shower. We bought a stroller frame, Bumbo, tummy time mat, diaper bag, books and high chair. Most of the big ticket items...crib, dresser, stroller, car seat, pack n play and glider were purchased for us off our registry by generous friends and family!

I put everything on the registry, but actually I've been finding some great deals on craigslist so then I'm taking stuff off that I find and hoping I get gift cards/cash instead :)

we bought everything ourselves. we didnt have a registry, because we are having a formal dinner party for her baby dedication at church and people will mostly give cash/checks and we prefer it that way.

I thought about this a lot because we have an amazing second hand store in town that has just about everything you need for a baby at ridiculously low prices. So it was hard for me to think about people paying retail for a new item, when there is a used item in great shape for a fraction of the price.

But... aside from telling my immediate family to check out that store for good finds and reassuring them that we didn't need new things, there wasn't much we could do unless we wanted to buy a lot of stuff ourselves.

So I registered. I registered for everything we'd need, from a crib, to the playmat to burp clothes. I kept our registry to the minimum things, skipping out on the extra stuff we didn't really need. It served as a list of everything we would need for LO, whether we bought it new or used.

Plus if you put everything on your registry, you can use the completion discount to buy what you still need later on.

I would say, that if you do have some hand me downs or stuff you can borrow, look through it and figure out what you want to take and then just take those things off your registry.

I started out with *everything* on there - and then took things off that I'd be ok buying myself. It turned out well - we got all the big things, and I had to buy all the little things. I also didn't register for things as I bought them myself - my mom kept yelling at me, but I'd rather someone spend $50 on a gift that I need when I was able to find a baby k'tan for $20, for example. I also found the my little lamb bouncer for $25, rock and play for $25, etc. So I was yelled at for buying things - but trust me, if you can save yourself money, it all evens out in the long run with how much you'll have to spend.

I also purchased our convertible car seat the week of the shower because although I had it on my target registry, they had clearanced it to $79 from $165 and I would have KICKED myself if no one bought it and then they were gone!

if this helps at all - we had 50 ish items on the BRU, and 25 or so on target. 20 items were bought off BRU and about 13 from target (target was smaller things - spoons, etc). I had 43 ish thank you notes to write. (lots of gift cards).

We plan on putting most things on our registry, even if we expect that we will be buying some items on our own. I hope that we will be able to take advantage of the 10% registry completion and it will be helpful for me to organize what we need/want on the registry.

My only concern is that if there is a lot of stuff on there, I don't want people to feel obligated to purchase for us. I almost feel better about having a smaller list, but not sure if that will happen.

I would put everything on there, provided you have room to store it if someone gets it for you (you can always return, but it might be far from the top of your to do list when your baby arrives).

I'd probably not put on things like a convertible seat because of expiration and umbrella strollers change a lot, so you might find one when the time comes that suits your needs better.

We put everything besides nursery furniture on the registry. And that's only because I'm impatient and I want to have it all set up before the shower(s).

I would put it ALL on the registry. You never know! And if no one buys it you get 10% registry completion (if your store offers it). So it's a win win.

The only thing I didn't put on there was my breast pump.

A friend of mine just sent me an email with a list of things that she recommended we'd need for LO's arrival in January. She had a list of items to register or buy new and things to borrow or buy used. On the registry/buy new list were the usual suspects - breast pump, crib, pack and play, baby monitor, etc. But then on the stuff to borrow/buy used, she had a bumbo, bottles, high chair, play mat...stuff that I would think we would just register for and (hopefully) receive as gifts rather than spend our own money on it. I mean, I think IF we don't get some of that stuff from our registry, THEN we'll try to buy it used, but it's not necessarily something that I would leave off the registry with the intent to just find it used ourselves. Am I wrong in thinking like this? I mean, obviously, we'll buy the crib and baby furniture - I'm not putting that on the registry. But the high chair? An umbrella stroller? That just seems like stuff we'd rather put on the registry and hope someone buys it for us.
