@mrbee: Maybe i'll give adaptation another try too...it has been over a decade since i have seen it (wow, I feel old!) so maybe it would strike me differently now.

@sloaneandpuffy: Good point on the great characters... I think that's why the director was able to get so many great actors, even for the bit parts!!

Adaptation was one of my favorite movies of all time. Not because I think I'm like too cool for "normal" movies... the meta-ness just sort of added an extra dimension. The characters were amazing, I thought.

@Pirouette: Sure it makes sense!

I liked Eternal Sunshine, but I really loved Adaptation... it really spoke to me at the time. Will have to rewatch it and figure out why!

@mrbee: Yes, I really liked Being John Malkovich! I think my problem with both of the other two movies is that I felt that the message was very transparent, and was being thrown in my face over and over. I loved the message, and it did make me think at first, but I felt it went too far to the point where I was no longer trying to think about it and more just annoyed that the idea was begin thrown in my face.

I think it's the writing style that makes it feel like I'm having an idea thrown in my face, and even though it's a clever idea, it falls flat for me because of the execution.

Does that make any sense?

Edited to add: I love movies that make me think, and that's probably why I felt so strongly about these two movies, because I wanted them to make me think, and instead they made me annoyed, haha.

@mrbee: @Pirouette: I love Eternal Sunshine! But Adaptation doesn't appeal to me at all. Nick Cage is one of the most out of touch people in Hollywood IMO.

@Pirouette: Eternal Sunshine raised some really interesting questions around memory and fate, I thought. If I were assaulted, would I be better served by remembering or forgetting it? And if I forgot it, would I then make the same mistake... or even be preyed on by the same person over and over?

It really made me think long and hard about memory, and traumatic experiences... that part was really profound to me.

Did you like "Being John Malkovich" at all?

haha, that was me! i'm sorry, i have absolutely nothing against identical twins, i promise :)

I found the movie contrived and a bit self-important - like it was trying too hard to be different and edgy but it didn't succeed in transforming my mind in any way (which is what I felt like it was trying really hard to do). In the end I found the writing too transparent. I actually thought the acting was terrific, I just didn't like the writing!

I haven't seen it in years, it just struck me the wrong way when I saw it (Eternal Sunshine struck me the same way). I hope we can still be friends :)

I read that somebody thought this was the worst movie ever and that kind of devastated me... I love this movie!!

I know Nicholas Cage can be weird at times and I have definitely not liked that many of his movies, but I thought he was absolutely brilliant in this... also, Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper blew me away as well. Brian Cox was only in a few scenes, but he was definitely a scene stealer!

But the real star was the screenplay I thought... it was so meta. I love how in an early scene, he explained how the movie could get Hollywood ridiculous... and then the movie did just that!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcCV4YQ-ZVQ

Anyway I really enjoyed the movie... I may be biased though, as an identical twin.
