With DD, I started with my street clothes laboring in the halls then later was wearing the mesh tube top that they had used to strap on the monitor to labor in the tub. I didn't bother with any bottoms since I was in the water and apparently, DH said that while I labored in the tub from 5-9 cm a lot of "stuff" came out so I guess it was a good decision! At one point when I came out around 7 for a check, I ripped off the mesh top and went from 7 to pushing in my birthday suit! They are right when they say modesty goes out the window during L&D. This time around I packed a black nighty that hits just above the knees but after reading all these replies, I may just do a strapless knit bra with some sort of knit skirt so my belly is exposed for monitoring. I'm GBS positive so I will need an IV as well.

I had packed a cute robe but ended up just wearing the hospital gown. LO's heart rate was having decelerations as soon as we arrived so I had to be continuously monitored and had an IV. I still was laboring in different positions and able to maneuver around near the machines.

Even postpartum, I stayed in their gowns the whole time. I was leaking milk and lochia and having meconium diaper blow outs on my lap and it just made sense to ruin their clothes instead of mine. I didn't feel like it made pregnancy an illness or disempowered me in any way to wear the gown, it was just practical.

ETA: I did bring grippy socks and flip-flops which were useful. Though I think they would have given me socks if I didn't have my own.

I just wore the hospital gown or naked.
My water broke, so I'd soaked the clothes I arrived in. I laboured in the tub a bit, so then I was naked, and just put the gown on when I was done. Actually didn't change out of the gown until I left the hospital two days after LO was born. I brought PJs, but I was bleeding so much I didn't want to ruin them.

hospital gown & mesh undies/pad for early labor. to walk the halls, I wore another one backwards. I brought in little slipper socks to walk the halls with b/c it was the end of January. And nothing in the tub. Only DH was in the room with me anyway. Once I got my sweet, sweet epidural I just wore the gown.

My water broke as I was walking in to the hospital so things were messy from the get-go. And when I'm in pain i'm not big on things constricting my skin so a sports bra would have been super uncomfortable anyway.

@looch: I was given a gown after I was admitted here.

I wore the hospital gown for both of my births.

Eta: my water broke first for both of my deliveries, so I was leaking all over the place on the hospital gowns.

I thought that I would care about what I was wearing before I was actually in labor. I bought one of those Pretty Pusher dresses -- there was a link upthread -- and in hindsight it was a waste of money. I really, really did not care what I was wearing, and a hospital gown would have been fine. I labored naturally for 17 hours and then finally got an epi. I spent several hours in the tub and iirc I was just naked in there, but I really don't remember. I guess maybe I put the Pretty Pusher back on afterwards? Or maybe I changed into a hospital gown? I really can't say. I don't remember. I think at one point I got cold and put on a long flowy cardigan over whatever I was wearing, but that was once I was already on the epidural.

FYI, my hospital had a big jacuzzi tub but it was not deep enough to submerge my shoulders so I felt cold the whole time I was in there, and I was lying at this weird angle an attempt to stay fully submerged. But labor felt way worse when they made me get out of the tub so I guess the water helped take some of the pressure off even though I felt really cold the whole time.

@Mrs.Someone: I already replied to this thread earlier I think, so sorry if you already saw it. I wore a sports bra on top, and a jersey knit cheapie skirt from Old Navy on the bottom. I just took the skirt off when I got in the shower/tub. It worked great!

Bumping this thread with a question! I think I have a plan on what to wear while in the hospital, except for in the tub! I really don't want to be naked with people coming in and out, and I'm pretty sure I'm not allowed to give birth in the tub.

So is it Ok to wear a tankini? Or will I regret having to change clothes during labor? And can I wear bottoms, or will the nurses need access?

Nothing. I had planned this detail, but when you're actually trying to get in and out of the tub while having contractions, drying off to put clothes back on is so not happening. And wearing wet clothes doesn't sound comfortable.

@Foodnerd81: Lol, DD2 pooped all over me too! I didn't mind either as the gown went straight in the trash after skin to skin and I just hopped in the shower - so much easier to clean up! It would have been kind of gross putting bloody, vernixy, meconium stained proper clothes in a bag to take home and clean...

with my first, I was induced, so I just got to the hospital in normal street clothes (hair and makeup done) and changed into a hospital gown.

with my second, I woke up in the middle of the night in labor and then labored at home as long as I could (got to the hospital at 7 centimenters). I wore a sweatshirt over a bra and baggy sweatpants. I ended up delivering naked because I labored in the tub. haha

@Ree723: they put C right on my chest too, and kind of cleaned her up a little but while she was on there and didn't give her the full wipe down until after our skin to skin. The grossness did not faze me at all. She also took her first poop right on my stomach. I was actually glad since then the nurses cleaned her and me up instead of Dh and I havin to deal with it :)

I bought a cheap but comfy nightgown to labor in, however, I ended up in and out of the shower alot and couldn't keep putting in on/off because of back labor so I ended up in bathrobe and eventually naked. It was a bit uncharacterisitc of me! I kind of regret it simply because there are some pics from right after birth that I would never feel comfortable sharing with anyone because of the sheer nudity/blood etc factor although they capture beautiful moments.

Hospital gown, that like I took off when I spiked a fever while pushing (so you aren't the only one @Cherrybee!). So I gave birth butt naked. My DH has politely asked that I wear a bra this time! I think I'll probably wear a nursing sleep bra, and ask if I can wear a yoga skirt instead of a hospital gown. Hospital gowns are gigantic and I felt like I was trying to hold it and get it out of the way so much.

For those that didn't wear a hospital gown, did you ask if it was okay not to? Did you just never change? Did the nurses give you a hard time about it? Was anyone required to change anyway? I don't want to be a prima donna about it. But then again, I'm sure the nurses would prefer if I wasn't completely naked for hours this time.

Hospital gown - but I don't remember putting it on either time! Both times I went to the hospital in yoga pants, a long sleeve short of DH's, and a nursing bra but have absolutely zero recollection of how or when I ended up in a gown. Meh, whatever - I liked having the gown as it was easy to do skin to skin with and I didn't care how gunky it got (in Australia they don't take the baby to clean it up before giving it to the mum for skin to skin. It comes out and goes right on your belly to cut the cord and then is moved up to your chest for the next hour or two. They sort of wipe it off whilst on your chest but there is still a lot of yuck that just gets all over!)

@coopsmama: I despise hospital gowns because of how the rub on my neck. I wore an Old Navy tank top and nursing bra, which I found very comfy.

ETA: they didn't "give" me the option, but I just took it ;) I also had an epi, but it still worked out just fine.
