For most of my labor it was just me and my husband. During the c-section we talked about my work and moving to Alaska until the spinal shakes got to be so much that I couldn't hold a conversation. After that, the only thing I said to the anesthesiologist was ZOFRAN! ZOFRAN! BLARRRRRP! Heh.

While I was in labor and delivering, no side conversations. When the doctor was stitching me up afterwards, he & my midwife were talking about cycling and how he was going for a ride up a very tall mountain in the area the next day. I chatted with them then, too, but I was also pretty tired :)

For the large majority of my labor it was either just me and my husband, or us and one L&D nurse. The nurse was about 20 weeks pregnant and when pushing was getting difficult for me I started asking her about her pregnancy to distract myself. Other than that everyone was just focused on the task at hand.

My OB and nurse were chatting about a new nurse on the floor. My nurse and the new nurse were going to have dinner later in the week, everyone seemed to like the new girl, blah blah blah. My anesthesiologist was apparently watching Sports Center while prepping my epidural. DH told me that later, and it explains the horrified look on his face during it. I thought he was just scared of the needle!

Definitely surreal to be concentrating on birthing a child and the drs and nurses are just having a normal day at work, making plans for when they get off.

I had a C-section with no labor so it was very relaxed. I was chatting with them as well. We talked about the music that was playing, the doctor's children, what I couldn't wait to eat once she was finally out, and I joked that the doctor could go home for dinner with his family since I was his last patient of the night. He laughed and said "most moms that come in here don't view that as a positive!" Oh and we talked about the rude NYC moms they've encountered during births and how I was so much fun. I had a blast at my delivery till I started puking from an allergic reaction to the synthetic morphine lol

During my c-section they were all talking about 80s music (Dancing on the Ceiling came on the radio in the OR) so it was kind of a nice distraction. Then my doctor and the nurses all guessed the weight (they were all really off because she was bigger than anyone expected) and when I was finishing up they joked about where I kept that big baby since I didn't look big.

@mrsjazz: sort of. I can't express how random it was! She was talking about turning the baby gorilla and getting excoriated after the newspaper article about it. The whole thing was completely random.

@Mrs. Jacks: well, you were still on topic talking about childbirth.

@regberadaisy: And I hadn't eaten in ages!!! The menu had color photos!

@grizz: Imagine if she switched hands! Baby juice on her phone.

@bisous: See, that's nice though.

@blackbird: I can imagine it would be a good distraction if you're pushing for that long.

@Mrsbells: Did the song make you laugh? That's crazy. Maybe it's a common thing to talk food in the OR?

My favorite anesthesiologist was talking about how she was moving to Virginia to teach at a university. I loved her so much and I'm sad that I won't ever be able to have her help me again.

My stupid nurse just said stupid stuff regarding my son and the baby's death. I was 2 seconds away from kicking her out of the room. My mother was, also.

I also heard a lot about the paperwork I was going to have to fill out. It was very daunting.

During the actual birth, my caregivers have been pretty focused on me. Basically, once I start pushing, after I roar my way through transition, somebody had just better reach out and catch- there's not really time for anybody to be doing any visiting.
But with my second birth, the only people in my room were DH, my doula, and my doctor. The warmer was in the hall outside, NOTHING was set up for the birth, and the nurse had just left the room to go do some charting. At my last check, I was 6 cm. and the nurse figured she had plenty of time. HA. Never mind that I was showing classic signs of transition and that this was my second birth (apparently this nurse hadn't seen many unmedicated labors and births). The urge to push came as I squatted down beside the bed (instinctively, I just thought it would make the contractions easier to bear) and when I stood up, leaning over the bed, the doctor checked and there was a head presenting. I don't think she was even wearing gloves. But I very clearly remember her yelling at the top of her lungs for the nurse, "WE NEED SOME HELP, WE'RE HAVING A BABY IN HERE!!!!!" and the nurse came running back down the hall. Lol, so yeah, that was the talk going on over my second birth. With my first birth, the midwives couldn't believe how fast my pushing stage was going.

I remember having some amusing conversations with the labor nurse (i pushed for 2.5 hours so uh....yeah, that's boring, so we talked!) but when my dr came in to deliver me, it was all business and all about getting the baby out. It was a good distraction to talk about other stuff!

Toward the end, my nurse was talking about heading to a Memorial Day Weekend party right after her shift--and how she was planning to have a drink for me for doing so well and sticking to my guns to have a natural birth.

They were pretty much focused on me and how well I was pushing other than that so I didn't mind!

They were talking about their lake vacation they were about to go on - three of my nurses were going together. They got so caught up in their conversation they forgot to stay on top of my contractions so I was pushing by myself. My OB's phone kept ringing and she kept answering it, which I thought was weird because her other hand was on the baby's head, and, umm, he hadnt been born yet! Lol

My OB and nurses were very respectful and didn't talk about anything else besides what was happening at the moment and trying to get me (us) comfortable.

I can see that in a C section but if it was during regular vaginal labor I would be kinda perturbed to be honest.

It was like, "Let's do a test push. Ok, we're going to get ready for delivery. So, anyway, did you know gorilla babies are delivered OP (sunny side up)?"

I had a c-section and I remember it being very surreal to be on that table having my insides cut open to deliver a baby while my anesthesiologist and two other doctors were looking at a dinner menu and trying to figure out what they were going to eat. I could actually see the menu and thought, "WTF? Are they serious?" Haha, but I guess it was just a routine day at the office for them and everyone needs a break to eat. Just seemed weird.

Did your nurses, midwives, doctors talk about anything interesting while you were in labor/giving birth?
