My OB told me that up to 2 cups of coffee a day is fine if you were a regular coffee drinker before getting pregnant. And in my case, he actually ENCOURAGED it because the caffeine helped with my pregnancy-induced migraines!

My doc also said that recent studies may show that women who drink up to 2 cups of coffee per day are at lowered risk for gestational diabetes.

My midwife is conservative, and said to avoid caffeine if I could. But if not, 1 small cup of coffee or one soda (regular, not diet) is fine.

I am just avoiding it altogether for now.

I was told it was okay to have a cup or two of coffee, but I didn't really drink it until the third trimester with Wombat when I'd have it on the weekends with a lot of milk. I'm so happy to be BFing so I can have a morning cup of coffee.

As long as I didn't have more than 3 caffeines a day (chocolate, coffee and soft drinks included) I was okay.

I LOVE coffee and it was one of the first questions I asked my OB about when I was pregnant. She said that she, herself, couldn't start her day without coffee during all her pregnancies (4 kids!) and that having a cup in the morning was perfectly fine.

Throughout my entire pregnancy, I had 1-2 cups of coffee a day and even some Coke, too. All things in moderation!

I was a several cup a day coffee drinker (and drank diet coke) before pregnant and even while TTC. Since being pregnant, I have cut WAY back to 1 cup a day in the morning and don't get dunkins or starbucks. I make it at home and drink it on the way to work. I have the occasional diet soda, too.

My doctor said while it's preferable to cut back on caffeine (including coffee) during pregnant, it's ok to have 250ml of caffeine a day. She said my morning cup of joe is still ok to have. She also said it's better to have regular rather than decaf because of the way decaf is processed.

my OB didnt address coffee specifically since I told her I dont drink coffee. She just gave me a daily limit of caffeine. I dont remember the actual number since I dont drink anything that has caffeine listed as an ingredient. I know some chocolate has small amounts of caffeine, but if it isnt listed as an ingredient I guess it must be a very tiny amount

I'm not voting because I don't think it's that cut and dry. My doctor said two cups of regular coffee a day is OK if you had a habit before you got pregnant. I mentioned that I just like a cup every once in a while - like if we're out to breakfast. She said that is just fine. She also said soda is fine, just don't go overboard.

On that same note, I have had two cups of coffee and maybe one full soda with caffeine since I got pregnant.

I am not TTC yet, but want to start getting into / out of any habits I need to change when we do.

I hear many pregnant women talk about switching to decaf and just as many talk about sticking with regular, in moderation, and avoiding decaf. I know it can vary widely by person and by doctor. What did your OB advise / what has been your policy?

{for what its worth, I gave up my diet coke addiction several months ago in exchange for 12oz of plain regular coffee per day and have come to loooove my morning coffee routine. would love to be able to keep it...}
