I went with my nephew for his first swim lesson, at 26 months, and he was pretty scared, so I think just getting them in the water early is a good idea so they won't develop a fear. The teacher tried to get him to climb out on his own but he was too scared and just clung to his mom (and he isn't that fearful of a kid). Having seen that, I'll take LO earlier just for the comfort in water factor.

Even though he was scared, when he came out I asked if he had fun and he said in the tiniest voice ever, Yes. Such a trooper.

City swim lessons in my town were a joke. You played in the baby pool and then in the big pool. Totally not worth the money. Now we do a different swim program which does ISR skills, songs, and preswimming skills. He can go under water and kick, roll and float on his back, reach the wall, and get himself out. We can go in with him but at almost 2 he is better on his own.

@T.H.O.U.: They concentrate on back floating a lot in LOs class. All the kids somewhat struggle with it.

@Thenetexan: Thats a good point! I doubt my daughter would even know to reach for the side.

I really hope they focus on back floating. From what I read that is the best safety thing to learn but right now she won't even lay on her back in the bath tub in an inch of water. I have no idea how they will get her to float in a pool. I have a feeling we will be going back for lots of follow ups!

We started at 4 or 5 months, it was mostly playing in the water. Back floats, belly floats, songs, kicks and eventually dunking under water. It was all about getting comfortable being wet and with water on their faces mixed in with games. We did 'jum offs' from the pool edge (I held her on the ledge, counted to three then launched her up and into the water with me). The older kids held their parents hands and jumped to them.

We started lessons at around 5 months old. It's really about getting them used to the water. LO is about 11 months old and he actually kicks his feet and uses his arms while swimming. He also knows how to go under water by himself and kick to bring him back up to the surface. DH was an Olympic caliber swimmer, so I'm not shocked LO is so natural in the water.

We did ISR lessons at 13 months. LO learned to reach for and hold on to the side of the pool and to float.

We started swimming at 6 months with the goal of getting DS used to the water. There are some older kids in the class (up to 18 months) and they teach them how to get in/out of the pool safely.

DD did swim lessons when she was a little over two, but she was in a class with infants. We just sang songs and got the kids use to the water so they wouldn't be afraid of it. There were a few things where the kids heads would go under water, but that's about it.

DD started lessons around 20 months. They taught her pool safety (walking around pools, don't get in the water unless there's an adult, etc...) and then they just tried to get her comfortable being in the water with the eventual goal of dunking her head completely under the surface and floating on her back.

It's probably all water safety and comfort, with the ultimate goal of teaching them how to float on their backs so they can breathe if they get into a jam.

At 6 months, I think it's more about introducing them to the water, getting them used to water in their faces/ears, getting them used to the feeling of floating, etc. I Think it's a really fun thing, but classes are expensive here so I don't know if it's worth it for my 6 month old!

We start city swim lessons next month. I was surprised that they offer a lot of classes after work for working parents. For kids 6 months to 2 years old, its a group of 10 children and the parents have to get in the water. Classes are 30 minutes long Monday - Thursday for 2 weeks (8 classes). The cost was only $50 so I figured it was worth it.

I am obviously not trying to teach her how to swim but more water safety. Do you think they will do this? What did your LO learn at swim lessons at this age?
