My 9 year old recently got a Wreck This Journal as a gift and she liked it A LOT. Also she uses here apron/cooking set quite a bit, chemistry kit, and although I haven't gotten her it- she'd like a Target card for room stuff. For Easter, I got her a six pack of long socks that were different animals. She likes those. Oh and fabric paint! She is totally into cutting up her clothes and painting it with patterns etc.

Another vote for the camera if it’s in the budget. Both of my nieces (12 & 9) have them and love them. I would also suggest getting extra film.

My nine-year-old niece is into baking and cooking. When I was shopping around for her Christmas present, I came across a Blue Apron-style program geared for kids. When @poppygirl15: mentioned a subscription to a magazine, it reminded me of that. So, if she's into food at all, a few deliveries of a subscription box might be fun. I bet there are other subscription kits, too, that would deliver something for her to do while stuck at home.

P.S. Found the one I was talking about - it's called Raddish.

Whenever I ask a mom about gift preferences, they don't seem to know or perhaps provide a generic idea that's not especially appreciated by the celebrant. Is it possible to txt or call her and ask yourself? Kids prefer to be direct about these things, so it would be a very short convo/msg.

I second the camera. I've got a son (same age) and he'd definitely love a camera with a few features to play around with. They're at the point where they can handle a more complex manual and take care of a non-kiddie camera.

Binoculars are fun to have and 10 is old enough to take care of a decent pair. Maybe get a bird guide and/or a guide to the features of the Moon too.

Stationary or a nice notebook (Moleskine or similar), and a nice pen or a really fun one. I remember I got a pen from my aunt with a big feather attached to it around that age (not a quill pen, but it had the look of one), and it was one of my favorite things for a long time.

Ten is a good age for upgrading art supplies. Good watercolor paint and paper is not cheap, but is a really nice gift if she likes to draw/paint.

Attractive hardcover versions of classics are awesome gifts. Even if she's read a book before, it's always nice to have a beautiful book on your shelf. The Barnes & Noble collectible editions are nice. They have gold edging, decent paper, and attractive covers. They're also mostly only $10 each.

@poppygirl15: ooh room stuff! Yes to this! I've seen some cute lamps that are initials recently. Justice and Target both sell them; I'm sure PB Teen has a "nicer" version if you want to splurge.

My girls are a bit younger (the older ones are turning 6 and 8), but they are very much in the "tween" mindset and don't typically ask for new toys very often, other than specific items related to Lego sets or American Girl dolls. They like kid-friendly beauty accessories - nail polish, lip glosses, sugary-smelling body splashes/lotions, and jewelry, so one thing they really enjoy is craft kits to make these things. Your niece may not be into the types of kits they enjoy, since they are very girly, but maybe you could find a kit related to something that she does like?

They also really love personalized things, either with their first name/monogram, or more generic items from Justice/Target's "More Than Magic" line with just the first letter of their name. Necklaces, keychains, water bottles, bags, etc...For something more special, you could purchase something on Etsy. My oldest has received things like hoodies and drawstring backpacks personalized with her name/interests, and she really enjoys using those.

What about a nice quality water bottle personalized with her name or monogram on a vinyl decal (you could buy one on Etsy), or a personalized LL Bean Boat Tote she could use for sports, school, the pool, library books, etc.? Personalized sleeping bag or beach towel (also LL Bean/Lands' End)?

I like josina’s idea. Another is something to spice up her room? Like some fun throw pillows, new poster, fun lamp? Or new sneakers if she’s into that? Or a magazine subscription. It’d be fun to get something in the mail, especially these days! There’s Ranger Rick or National Geographic kids if she likes animals, Cricket if she’s into reading, and there must be a Sports Illustrated for kids.

What's your budget? Maybe one of those instant Polaroid cameras (or any camera)?
My niece was into lego sets at that age.
A Wreck This Journal book?

My niece is turning 10 this month and her bday party is obviously postponed due to everything going on. I want to send her something really special but when I asked my SIL for suggestions she wasn't particularly helpful. One suggestion was a photo book but I don't have a ton of pictures of my niece with my kids. So I might do a little photo collage instead but I need something else and I have no idea what to get her! She's not particularly girly. Help!
