X was born in early November in Seattle. As a newborn, he wore warm fleece pajamas when we were out on cooler days, and when we were outside for over 15 minutes or especially cold days, we had a super thick fleece 3mo size bunting from REI. Even though it doesn't get that cold that often, I have still found good quality, warm buntings to be good investments-- both when he was a newborn, and for his 2nd winter, when he was a 1yr old. It made getting outside easier bc I didn't worry about him being cold.

If you're only going to be going to and from the car, we were fine with just adding hat and fleece blanket. (Fleece seemed to give the most warmth for the least amount of bulk to carry around.) Sometimes we even just wrapped a blanket around and tucked into the Beco when we wore him at the grocery store.

We're pretty minimalist, but I really you don't think you need more than that for keeping baby warm around here, especially if you baby wear. That will keep the baby (and you!) pretty warm anyway.

OH! And I second what @Sandy said for around the house.

Our LO was born late Feb so we only dealt with the end of cold weather but we dressed him almost exclusively in fleece footed sleepers and added a hat and blanket while out. For sleeping we did a footed pj with a swaddle blanket over.

@Mrs. Jacks: Birth and Beyond closed! :( I think the person who taught classes there is still doing it privately, but the storefront is unfortunately empty. It's sad, especially since we don't have that many good places for baby stuff within the city.

We're in Portland too, and my daughter was born in September. She wore sleepers or onesies with footed pants for her first winter. When we'd go out, I'd put a warm suit on her. I babywore her, so I never needed a bundleme or anything. If she'd been in a stroller that winter, I probably would have had one. But depending on how much you plan to use a stroller, you may not need anything more than just a warm over suit.

As an aside, my daughter's warm suit was a skunk suit, which never failed to delight me.

I'm in Portland so the weather is almost exactly the same. I'd recommend one of those free (you pay shipping only) carseat covers as they're waterproof. We also plan on lots of fleece footed pjs but not much else will be changing compared to now. We did buy a few bunting outfits for when it gets really cold and we're taking him out though.

@HLK208: I don't think we weigh in on those as far as I know. I preferred not to use them because I need a visual on the baby :) Chest rise and fall is key to eliminating my freak-outs!

@Mrs. Jacks: we used our bundle me in the stroller (we had 3 weeks of 15-20 degree weather in 09 when B was little). Do peds not recommend them for car seats?

LO was born early November and we're in Toronto so it got very cold. We had a couple of snowsuits and long sleeved sleepers. One thing that was very useful was a cover for the Ergo. We got a Jolly Jumper one and it was fabulous, really helped keep the wind and cold off when we wore her.

I had a Seattle baby. We did have one snowsuit, but otherwise we focused on long sleeved onesies and pants. I don't believe in the carseat cover unless it gets below 0 degrees F. Swaddle blankies, socks, hand mitts and some hats and you should be fine! You should definitely check out the First Weeks class at Birth and Beyond and if you are delivering at Swedish, sign up for Bringing Baby Home class. It was awesome!

Yes to hoodies!

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Mine came last November in Seattle, and they lived in fuzzy footed clothes (not necessarily PJs, though- I felt better about myself if they were dressed, too). Footed pants with long sleeve onesies and hoodies were a staple in our house, even from the beginning. I covered them up with knitted blankets when we went out, and they seemed fine. We would go out in the rain, too- blanket covering them up to their chests and the sunshade to cover their faces, and they never got wet.
@PurplePeony: We had them in jammies (terry cloth, usually) and Swaddle Mes. We ended up having to turn the heat up, because we didn't feel like we could bundle them well enough, plus we were up enough in the middle of the night that we wanted it warm, too. That heat bill sucked, though.

I had a winter baby (November 2011) and we just kept the house pretty warm and had her in footed sleepers a lot during the day and had lots of blankets to tuck around her when she was in her carseat.

During the night I loved the nightgowns with openings at the bottom so I could just pull it up for diaper changes in the middle of the night (no unsnapping or zipping in the dark). I love the ones from baby gap - thick but breathable. And she was swaddled and slept in a rock and play with a blanket kinda draped over her (no way the blanket could get wrapped around her). I think when it got super cold I put her in onesie and sleep gown for the night with a swaddle and she lived in onesies layered with footed sleep and plays during the day.

Can't find them on baby gaps site on my phone but try looks like this - keeps them mostly dressed for middle of the night changes...loved the ones that had side snaps (hard to find bc most are like shirts)

Ooh, I have the same question (also in Seattle). I'm mainly wondering about nighttime -- what types of clothes do you swaddle over in the winter to keep the baby cozy enough? We usually keep the house pretty cool at night (63-64) but I'm guessing we should keep it a bit warmer once LO is here?

I am due November 28th, so my baby will be brand new during our cold months (December--February). We get a little bit of snow here, but mostly lots of rain. The temperature rarely goes below freezing.

What sort of items will I need for her?

A footmuff for the car seat? Lots of hats?
If you had a winter baby, what did they wear out when they were brand new? Just a sleeper with blankets? Fleece suits?

If you have any must-haves, I need to hear about them!
