They deal. LO is almost 1 and they hold her on days they really want her to nap. Otherwise it's one 30 minute nap.

Kids definitely adapt! I was convinced that there was no way my LO was going to sleep on a mat on the floor at daycare, and he was 13 months when he started. The first day I took him, he slept an hour and a half for his afternoon nap, and I was thrilled. He usually goes anywhere between an hour and 2 hours while he's there and adapted really well!

@daniellemybelle: I don't think they can just let a baby cry. My LO did not take great naps at daycare, too much stimulation. They would rock him to sleep, but he would only take about 3 naps, all about 40 mins- 1 hour. He naps much better in the toddler room, all the kids sleep at the same time and take a 2 + hour nap.

Well, she still sucks at daycare naps after 5 months there (takes 2-3 30 min naps), but she is SO happy during the day that I don't really mind. She makes up for it with 11-12 hours at night. They don't do any nap training at our daycare, so they just let them nap whenever. It's very different from the weekends, when we let her cry for a couple mins, then she's down for 1-2 hours.

It's weird, but it works for us.

At my daycare, in the infant room the babies each nap whenever they want, meaning that the teacher puts them in the crib or soothes them via rocking when they start showing tired cues. The cribs have wheels, so they often rock the crib itself to help a fussy, overtired baby fall asleep if need be.

For the toddler room, there is a defined nap schedule of one nap per day...there I think peer pressure helps a lot.

For a 2 yr old preschool, the teacher rocked her at first. Now she pats her as needed. She has her work cut out for her!

@daniellemybelle: they rocked my LO completely to sleep for a long time in the infant room; then she learned to fall asleep on her own there (which she still doesn't really do at home). I think for most little ones it's kind of similar to seeing how much you can get away with: if mom is there 24/7 changing her schedule to accommodate moods/needs/etc, then they will need that. If that isn't the case; most adjust. That said, LO only took 20 minute naps until she switched into the toddler room!

Interesting! In the situations where the babies learn to nap, I wonder if it involves crying? I just can't imagine it working any other way for my LO. She protests loudly if she is not rocked completely to sleep which takes up to 20 minutes, and then I spend another 20 halfway through extending her nap.

I do think she would be happier & her overtiredness would show itself less if she was at daycare because of the stimulation. When we are out she can stay awake for up to 3 hours happily but at home she can start to get cranky at 1.75 hours. I'm really boring!

They nap trained her and it was awesome. She actually sleeps harder at daycare because she plays harder there than at home

I think that they also nap train babies so often, they do it with confidence and our LOs feed off their confidence somehow :)

R takes terrible naps at daycare but they always say she is SO happy...if she doesn't nap at home, all hell breaks loose. I think a lot factors into this but two main things: at daycare, there is a lot more stimulation, and (for me) when I was a SAHM, naps were necessary and if they were off, I would spend way too much time over thinking it and getting frustrated. At the daycare, they just roll with it.

They deal with the crappy naps. R is the queen of car naps. It was 9 months before she would do an hour, although usually 45 mins. There is so much going on that babies are much more stimulation so they seem to be able to last longer between naps then they would at home.

My LOs were only ever able to take 1 nap at daycare(catnaps on the way there and home). They would have been so fussy at home, but I think the stimulation allowed them to stay awake longer.

Um. They just deal. And I meant the teacher. Lol my LO was queen of 20 minutes for ever and ever. Didn't matter if the other kids were still Napping. She was up and ready to go!

Even now the other kids nap 2.5 hours and she 1.5 so the teachers just sit with her and they play quietly until everyone else Wakes upm

I think it's peer pressure. They just learn to nap together. It's pretty amazing. Our daughter was a horrible napper, and she's still pretty bad at home, but at daycare I get a report every day that she naps 12:30-2:30 with the rest of her class. Her teachers do say that it's harder to get her down than some of the other kids in her class, but compared to what she does at home, her 2-hour scheduled naps at daycare sound like a dream!

She learned after the first week that she needed to deal with everything at the sitter's house and try to nap. She has good days and bad days. We just deal and hopefully she will have a little nap on the way home. We are sleep training in a couple of weeks and hopefully that will make her naps better. Her sleep
Has been awful this week or so because she is teething. But, I think one of them is finally popping through so we may be back on the road to recovery.

I feel like I am a slave to LO's naps lately. She's so grumpy if she doesn't sleep well so I bend over backwards to make sure she gets 3 solid naps.

I didn't return to work & if I had my mom would have watched her, but I have been thinking that if she were in daycare, I guess they would either have nap trained her, or she would be overtired. There's no way daycare providers can be as intense as I am about naps. What do they do in these situations? Is it up to the parents?
