I didn't take a breastfeeding class, and I had lots of difficulties. If I had to do it again, I still wouldn't take a class. You can find out the things you need to know from the info in the hospital or online. I was intimidated/irritated by The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, they make it sound like you are doing something wrong if you don't practice attachment parenting which I never intended to do. You'll get info from the lactation consultant in the hospital, and if you need more help afterward, don't hesitate to find a lactation consultant. We have spent a few hundred dollars on breastfeeding gear/help/pumping supplies and it is still cheaper than formula and so worth it.

Mine was similar to PPs. We watched a couple of videos, practiced some holds with dolls, optimal positioning of baby's chin and mouth to breast. My favorite part was drawing a nipple on DH's elbow and learning how to manually release milk. We talked about mastitis, benefits of breastfeeding and she gave us lots of handouts and samples. I enjoyed my class, I liked talking to the lactation consultant.

Lol thanks girls. I've noticed it's funny the things people are prudish about- two of my SIL's have said they'll never bf cos it means you basically can't leave the house:)
I'll look up that book and grab a copy, it'd be handy to have the info here. Thankfully there is a lactation consultant freely available in the hosp, so unless I'm unlucky with wanting her in the middle of the night or something I won't have to worry about paying for that- its state covered here.

I agree with @owlmom: and doing research will be more helpful, IMO. I researched before the class so I knew a lot going into it an the only real thing I learned from the class was that there were a logic immature people about to give birth (they couldn't handle all the boob talk/pics).

My class taught similar things as pps' classes. I didn't really learn anything that I hadn't already learned from reading The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding. IMO, I would read up on breastfeeding from reputable sources, and save the money you would spend on a class to put toward hiring a lactation consultant if you have problems. Actually breastfeeding a baby is so different than pretending with a doll.

In mine they talked about how to get a good latch, which is they key to nursing without pain. We also talked about the benefits of breast feeding, how to make sure your baby is getting enough to eat, and safe sleeping arrangements. Mine was helpful, and I also law a lactation consultant afterwards because of a tongue-tie issue (which is not common). I would recommend that too if there are problems.

First they showed a video of a baby who was just born and the process of skin on skin while the baby found the boob and started breastfeeding. It was pretty awesome. The talked about the perks of breastfeeding, we used dolls to try out different positions, and they talked about things that can go wrong and how to fix it.

I loved that class.that being said, I only lasted a week because too much went wrong and I couldn't take the pain.

Just wondering what they actually cover! Our hosp doesn't seem to offer it, should I go look for one elsewhere? Is this info I'll need?
