@anonysquire: This!

I avoid calling his step mom and mom anything. I refer to his step mom by her first name and his mom as your mom when I'm talking to him.

It always weirded me out when kids/teens would call their friends parents mom and dad. So weird.

I call her "auntie". It's the south Asian way. And I call my FIL "uncle". It was weird at first but I'm used to it now, and the bonus is that all do DHs family that is older is called "auntie and uncle" so if I can't remember eir names it doesn't matter.

My husband calls my mom "nana" since that is what the grand kids call her (and what our LO will call her). She's fine with DH using her first name, but in his culture that's rude, and he can't bring himself to do it, lol.

Dr. Mom.

She is definately a second mother to me, but in my culture we would never call our mother in law Mum/Mom. When she asked me to call her Mom, she had just finished her PhD, so I started calling her Dr. Mom and it stuck, plus it means it is technically different to Mum/Mom!

When DH and I started dating she was 'Nana' to my stepdaughter and my now SIL so I've been calling her that since then. DH has really made a lot of effort to be close to my mom and he calls her "Mom". Both my mother and I are so touched by it. DH would like it if I called my MIL "Mom" so I try but after calling her 'Nana' for all these years it's hard to remember! She and I are both pretty shy so it can be awkward at times!! She's a sweet woman though, no MIL complaints here.

I used to call her umma, which is mom in Korean. Now I call her halmoni, which is grandma in Korean, since LO is usually around. She signs my cards, and when she calls, she identifies herself to me as mommy, which cracks me up. I think the fact that I am Chinese and the Korean words don't have much significance to me makes it easier. I couldn't actually call her mom in English or Chinese, though DH calls my mom "mom".

I've managed to avoid calling her anything in the ~6 years I've known her, lol. If I couldn't avoid calling her something I'd use her first name. But she does sign card and stuff as "Mum" which is what DH and his siblings call her. I think my parents sign stuff mom and dad but DH calls them by their first names. He's considered calling them mom and dad too. He's a lot closer to my parents than I am his, plus his are mum and pop.
