(Mother in law and Grandma in korean.) I just don't feel comfortable calling her any form of mother. </p> <p>She calls me her daughter. She used to buy me cards addressed to "Daughter-in-law" and would cross out the "in-law" part and write "you're my real daughter!" But I'm Asian and I'm not used to calling elders by their first names (I'd normally call them auntie or uncle). But that's just not how it's done here so I call them by their first names. They also refer to each other by their first names and at times, and BIL sometimes calls his Mom by her first name (which I find weird because he normally calls her mamma). </p> <p>My Mom wants hubby to call her Mom. FIL still says "this is DH's dad", so I don't call him anything. If he say's he's "DH's dad" then he'll just be "DH's dad." </p> <p>DH calls my parents mom and pa, just like I do. This is what my parents and all the adults in my family have done, so I didn't realize it wasn't common/the norm. Four years in it still feels weird to say/hear, honestly, but I see it as respecting our parents. Sorry lady - hold your horses. I'm not comfortable with that because it's always just been my mom and me and that title is quite special to me due to that. I probably wouldn't mind calling FIL "dad" because that title holds no real meaning to me - but I don't because it would obviously be rude to call one the title and not the other.
