To me anything past eighteen months becomes extended bf'ing, primarily because that's roughly the point that bm becomes supplementary nutrition rather than the primary food source (as per KellyMom).

Kathy Detwyller (spelling) has written some really interesting stuff regarding the natural and biological age for weaning, I'll see if I can find it!

ETA Here's the link:

Anything over a year but only because that's when they are ready to transition to WCM or another alternate as well. Not because I think it's too extended or crazy by any means!

@sera_87: The WHO does recommend BFing until 2. I think that recommendation is aimed more at undeveloped countries where clean water and nutritious foods are hard to come by, which is why the AAP's recommendation is different.

Past two.

It is my understanding that breastmilk is supposed to be the primary nutrition until 1. Following that logic, weaning would begin at 1. That is my personal understanding and interpretation. Baby would begin foods at 6 months to get used to them not to replace nursing.

I have always thought over a year, allowing that you wouldn't necessarily stop cold turkey right at 12 months or anything. But now C is just about 11 months and there is no way I want to wean anytime soon. So really to me the line is somewhere between 12-18 months. Also the fact that they can start milk and not need formula at one makes it a logical line.

Most people I know irl would consider past 12 months to be extended, and I feel like some people already think past six months is.

I would say the definition is beyond 12 months, to breastfeed beyond the recommended age. I think perceptions get skewed when you're thinking of hb or other parenting communities. I'll nurse LO as long as she wants but IRL I know only a handful of women who breastfed past 1.

@Mamaof2: Yep!

I agree with PP that extended BFing isn't anything to be embarrassed about and sometimes there are negative connotations with it. LO will be 11 months next week and weaning is nowhere in sight for her. I NEVER thought I'd be an extended breastfeeder, but if anything I'm proud of it! :)

Prior to having a baby, I would have said anything beyond 12 months, but now I say 18-24 months. At 12 months she still seemed like such a baby, but by 18 months she was definitely a toddler and that's when I would consider it EBF.

For me it's a mix of cultural norms and what @hilsy85: said, at this point, they don't strictly need bm (or formula) to survive.

I feel like after 12 months. At 9 months I'm the odd one out who's "still" breastfeeding, OMG. I've been getting lots of little comments already, and i can't imagine once he turns 1 but he's a boob addict so we probably won't wean for awhile.
