@spaniellove: agreed!

And as others have said before, you don't really know how far you'd go before you are in that position.

@littlek: It does and it doesn't. On an individual level, no, but on a population level, when insurance is leveraged, it matters.

I realize it is a sensitive topic and one we all don't like to discuss, but it's along the lines of end if life care. How is it decided who qualifies, what care and at what cost.

I think these labels only serve to reinforce negative thinking about IF...if you need help getting to your baby you need it, there should be no shame or stigma involved. Every baby is a miracle, though some a little more so in their conception.

I agree that any medication or procedure to enhance the likelihood of getting pregnant constitutes a "medical intervention." Not quite sure where acupuncture, herbs, etc., fit, although still probably an "intervention"

What I love about this conversation is how dramatically my own thinking shifted over about a 2 year period. Initially I said "I don't think I would ever do IVF"...and now I'm, seriously considering it. For my own peace of mind, I don't think it matters how "natural" a conception was. I think we all have to make whatever decision is in line with our conscience and best meets our goals.

I definitely considered the metformin I was taking to get pregnant with S an intervention, and therefore not a totally natural conception.

For us, we were willing to do meds and IUI, but my husband was not on board with IVF and use of donor materials, and also wouldn't have gone for adoption.

For me it means no medication or treatments specifically for the purpose of getting pregnant. If you had a thyroid condition that was preventing pregnancy which should be treated anyway, I wouldn't consider that medical intervention for the purpose of getting pregnant.

I already answered this topic 8m ago, but now I feel differently. I feel that whether or not we call it "natural" is not the point. The point if to FRIKKIN GET PREGNANT. I don't care what people call it: I would like more kids please.

Interesting question. I guess "getting pregnant naturally" to me would mean getting pregnant without any medications, or interventions that would require a doctor.

I would have done absolutely anything to get pregnant, including as many rounds of IVF we could afford.

@spaniellove: I agree. Sorry to say this but, I would seriously punch someone in the face if they told me how I conceived my child was not natural. I'm fine with admitting that we needed help. Natural is not constructive whatsoever.

I think preseed, acupuncture, pineapple, green tea, etc. are still in the "natural" realm. I can't decide if the line is if it requires someone else's help- like going to a doctor, or whether it is something not involving sex (IUI/IVF).

@Mrs.Someone: same.
Whether or not medication is needed, if it takes sex to make eggs and sperm meet = natural.

I think I would go to the depts of the earth to get pregnant if I wasn't able to. But, I would also be very open to adopting if all else failed. The only thing I wouldn't do is surrogacy. I'd rather adopt a child who would otherwise not have a home, if I couldn't get pregnant.

For the record, I don't view "medical intervention" as a negative thing. It's wonderful to live in a world where we have options for our care. My son is asthmatic and you better believe I use his nebulizer when he needs it. It's just a matter of some people making the decision not to pursue them.

Decisions in my family are made as a team, so if we were facing the possibility of having to do an IUI, while I might consider it, my husband is against it. It took me awhile to get to the point where I was okay with that and it shouldn't be looked at as being judgey. Everyone has different tolerances and to imply that I can not possibly understand the situation because I conceived my son without intervention is being equally judgey.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter to me how you build your families. I can just say what would or wouldn't have been an option for my family. I am also in the camp where I don't believe it's every woman's right to carry and concieve their own child, it's just not biologically possible.

Like many others here, I would consider "medical intervention" to be anything other than just plain old "doin' it."

Of course, like anything else there are different "levels" of that.

As for us, I think we would go so far as to do 1 or 2 IVFs if needed. Not trying to sound...judgey or anything, but I think it's easy for some to say "Oh I would never do (fill in the blank)" if you're not faced with possible issues. Unless it's a real possibility for you, I think it'd be hard to say what you would or wouldn't do to have a child. When I was younger, (and joyfully naive to what lay ahead) I could never imagine myself considering IVF. And while we aren't there yet, after over a year and a half, and still no baby, I can say with full confidence now that I'd at least give it a shot. KWIM? I'm sure for some it's a deal breaker, and I do respect that. Going through what we have gone through so far is hard enough, I can see how some would chose to not take it farther.

FYI we might be starting injectables in Sept, if needed. While I'm not looking forward to that, I'm happy that we are at least progressing.

And if I DO get pregnant, I might have a condition that would require me to give myself injections daily. (Def. not looking forward to that!) It would be to help insure I wouldn't lose another one. Curious to know if that is thought of as a medical invention by some?

I must say I'm glad we live in a world where we have these choices! No matter what you're comfortable with, there's options for all! :)

Any time you need a drug to help, you're out of the realm of 'getting pregnant naturally'. I would have gone to hell and back for my first child. Now that we're looking at considerable hormonal intervention for any additional children, I'm not so sure. But then, my uterus isn't working well anyway, so I have to do something to fix it.

@TheReelDeal: So very very true.

I'm a firm believer that it's easy to say what someone would or wouldn't do in a particular situation until you're in it...and that goes for a lot of life issues. It's easy for someone who gets pregnant easily to say "they'd never" til a few heartbreaking years go by and still no baby. Then, suddenly you're in a situation you never expected and considering things perhaps you never thought you would.

Oh and I want to add that Ivf may not be "natural" but it creates life! Inductions and ultrasounds and c sections and surrogates and and basal thermometers and all the drugs we take for every ailment and surgeries we have for various conditions, None of these things are "natural" either. In fact most of us who believe in western medicine are not doing everything " naturally". So it kind of annoys me when people get all weird about things like Ivf or clomid as though its playing god or something. Many people have many reasons they will or won't go a certain route but to me none of them are superior or more natural than any others unless they are living like Amish people. I say dowhat you need to do to bring life and don't assume that any kind of intervention is more or less potent than another.

If you are ovulating on your own and your partner's fine as well, that's a totally different perspective than someone who may have lost a fallopian tube, or partner has poor morphology so they need intervention to achieve their dream of a family.

In the end, we all do what feels right to make our families and no matter how it happens it's all beautiful.

Spose anything other than good ol conception from sex. Having said that, I'm all for whatever intervention necessary. Obviously since IVF was the thing that finally knockd me up.
