@Mrsbells: Yep.

If I don't have to wake up before 5am, I consider it STTN. She goes down at 6:15-6:30.

My almost 4 month old (17 weeks today) sleeps around 8 hours before fussing for a feed.. of course I dont fall asleep as soon as she does because an 8pm bed time for me would be a little crazy.

To me, my 5.5 hours *is* through the night... if he goes to sleep for a second nap. When he doesn't, it may "count" as through the night, but it really sucks.

Even though I knew the 6 hour definition, I didn't really think of LO as sleeping through the night until he was sleeping through MY night, and that only happened at 10 months when he dropped his last night feeding.

If I am talking to someone else I clarify whether they mean Medical Definition of 5 hours, or a parent's definition of 8-12 hours!!

My son sleeps 5 hours stretches and has for awhile, but he's only slept 8 hours ONCE and never come close since (a month ago).

I know that "technically" a continuous 6hour stretch is sleeping through the night. But for me it would be awesome if she slept the whole night without waking up! Or even just once is great. :)
The killer is she loves to wake up around 4/5am and at that point she does not want to go back in her crib.

LO goes to sleep around 7:30pm every night until 7:30am and usually has 2 feeds in between. My idea of sleeping thru the night is that sleep without the wake ups. I have some friends with babies a couple months older and they have been doing that stretch of sleep for a long time. Im jealous lol!

@winniebee: oh my. We are having such an issue with this waking him up at 10:30 for a feed as we did it from whe she first came home. I just wrote a post about it. Now at almost 12 weeks, lo wakes up naturally at that time for a feed and we are trying to drop it and let her wake up naturally. When we try to feed her at that time this week, she barely takes any. Oh the drama lol!

Up until LO was about 6 months old, I considered an 8-hour stretch to be "sleeping through the night." AFter 8months of age, my definition changed to sleeping the whole night.

@erwoo: yes! Usually if he falls asleep early we unswasdle him around 10 or so and he will wake for a final feed then sleep il 4 or 5. Last night we decided to see what would happen if we didn't wake him up. We attempted a dream feed but he only took 1 ounce. I think we will go back to getting him up for a final feed : )

And, my defn is I go to bed and don't have to wake up til morning to feed!

My personal definition is from bedtime to wake up with no feedings in between. I've also read that sleeping from 12-5 is considered sleeping through the night.

My LO started doing 5-6 hour stretches at 6 weeks but since he went to bed at 8 we were still getting up twice a night to feed. It definitely didn't feel like he was sleeping thru the night to me!

@winniebee: Ouch! Was that your first time putting the LO down at 8pm? I'm afraid to try that for fear that I'll have to get up an hour later to feed as well. I sleep late...midnight. I try to get my LO nursed and put to sleep around 11/11:30pm. Late, but works with my schedule. He sleeps until noon the next day, sometimes earlier b/c we have to head out for my oldest's activities, and gets 3 naps a day. Eventually, he'll have to get on my oldest's schedule with sleeping around 9/9:30pm. Yes, also late, but works for me as I don't get up early! Haha!

to me it means that once i go to bed, I dont have to wake up in the middle of the night to feed until morning. On a good day she can sleep 9hours+ but other days she will sleep atleast 5-6 hours.

@erwoo: I felt well rested until I put LO down at 8 last night and he woke up at 1:20 to eat...and I'd gone to bed at 1030. Then he got up at 5 and ate and wanted to play but then we both went back to bed from 6-9.

I follow the 5-6 hours as well. That works for me b/c then I can get a good stretch myself w/o waking up; but I do get up to nurse him around 4am - 5am and then get another 1.5 - 2 hours after that. I feel pretty well rested most of the time. :)

I always thought it meant what it sounds like - sleeping all night long! But apparently some sources say sleeping 5-6 hours is really "through the night" for babies. My son has been sleeping in 5-6 hour stretches (well it's usually 5 or 6 then 3) since about 9 weeks and once even slept from 10:30 to 7 am, though he hasn't done it since!

What's your definition of sleeping through the night?
