I considered it to be when I didn't have to go in to calm, feed or give the pacifier from bedtime to morning (at that age, 6-6). If he woke up and was able to put himself back down within a minute or 2, that still counted!

Like others have said, my definition was when I didn't have to get up! Which, if he went to sleep at 7:30pm but I didn't go to bed till 10pm, I'd want him to sleep until at least 6:30am. Anything before 6:30am, and I'd consider it a MOTN wakeup!!!
But I think the "true" definition is like 5 hours or something like that.

@sapphire: Same! I consider STTN when mommy and daddy are well rested hahaha. Baby has just started sleeping in her own bed for about 7 hours a night (9 pm-4am), wakes to nurse and goes right back down til 7. I'll be happier when she drops her night feed but I'm good with this schedule!

I considered it when I could get a decent nights sleep. So at least 8 hours without needing intervention.

For me it's that my sleep does not get interrupted by her waking. Usually she sleeps 7:30pm-8:30am at almost 2. At that age I think 8 hours is STTN. T would wake to eat then go back down easily- easily being the key word- if she ate and did not go right back down then she's not STTN.

I say my kids STTN when I can put them to bed and don't have to do anything until they are up for the day. That doesn't necessarily mean that they don't ever make a peep, but if I have to settle them or feed them, then no.

My newborn is a bit tough to define though. He isn't going to bed very early yet (usually sometime between 8p-9p) but will often sleep until 5a, eat, and then go back to sleep until 730ish. So technically I wouldn't say he STTN, since he eats and then goes back to sleep before getting up for the day. But I know a lot of people would consider it STTN. Ultimately I don't really care either way -- as long as I'm getting sleep! ha.

For me it means that I don't have to wake up and tend to baby at night -- with the caveat that sleeping until 5 (even though most people hate getting up at 5!) is STTN. So, for me, even 9-5 would be STTN.

Like 7-8hrs
DS is 14 weeks he normally sleeps 7:00-4/5 I consider that STTN anything over that is a bonus!!!!
At that wake he will feed and go back down until 7/8

I consider sleeping through the night going from bedtime to a normal morning wake up time without any wake ups or noise (other than a few noises as they change sleep cycles).

I consider it sleeping through the night to be a solid night's sleep for everyone. If baby needs me to feed her or help her get back to sleep, I don't consider it sleeping through the night. My 17 month old does not sleep through the night by my definition. She's a great night sleeper, but she still wants to nurse and still needs me in the middle of the night.

At least 5-6 hours. My LO sleeps about 9 hours and if it wasn't for our morning schedule he would naturally sleep for another hour. We recently used CIO to drop the MOTN feeding, which was probably me misreading his needs cue anyway.

To me it is when the baby goes to sleep and doesn't wake again until morning. If I have to tend to DD after she's gone to bed then I don't consider that STTN.

For me it's sleeping the hours I'm asleep. So when they go from 1030pm to 730am, give or take 30 minutes. But I work hard to get my kids to sleep from 730-730!

@agold: I also find this so confusing! for us, *now*, I consider it baby sleeping from bedtime at 7:30pm to 5:30/6am, no feedings (but we night weaned already), and baby puts himself back down with no crying or minimal crying if he wakes up.

I think 6-8 hour stretch at that age is STTN. Ideally though they are in bed for 10-12 hours overnight so that means 1 wake up.

I have a 5.5 month old and I'm wondering what is really considered "sleeping through the night"? Is it when baby goes down and doesn't make a peep until morning? Or when baby stirs, but doesn't need a feeding? What if baby sleeps well, but eats a few times at night? Ha! I really don't know.
