@Foodnerd81: like others have said- it counts as a word once it's predictable/consistent! K says 'mo-mo' for more, but it counts!

I've been wondering this very thing! E doesn't have any made-up words yet (that I've noticed) but she has a whole host of words that she has only said a few times...... At what point do you class it as part of her vocabulary. She said Google today!

Yep, I count anything he uses consistently to mean something, even if it's totally wrong! Xander says "doe" for "stroller", but he says it consistently and I know what he's saying, so I count it!

@Foodnerd81: it is SO fun. And it's so fun hearing how they make up words--for some reason LO says reflection as "fockadee". No idea why but it cracks me up.

I woudl count that. For a long time, LO said thank you as "guh duh". But it was consistent which is what counts.

EI counts anything he consistently uses.

Some are obvious: mama, dada, duh (dog), bah (ball), muh (more), melmo (Elmo), tee (tree) and some not so much: duh-dah? (What's that?), geh-geh (thank you), ick (Mickey Mouse), duhhh (duck).

Doctor said anything they say consistently to mean something. If I didn't count ba for ball he'd have no words. He drops the end off of all of his words and he must have close to a hundred now and is starting to make sentences. Most kids don't annunciate well until well after 2. (Some do of course.)

@SugarplumsMom: haha pretty sure C would mean booby if she said booby. She loves her milk. :)

@illumina: good idea. We never say Ta for thank you, but I've heard it. I was trying to teach her the sign for it when she started responding with this new "word".

@Foodnerd81: awww, what a cutie

I count them when they sound more or less like the proper pronunciation...e.g. she says "Ba" for Ball and Balloon, but I don't really count those yet. We taught S "Ta" for Thank you--do you guys in the U.S. say that? She says it all the time now :)

When do you personally start counting something as a "word"? What is the 'official' way?

C's first were pretty clear- mama, dada, dog (da!). Now she has been saying the same sound back to is after we say Thank You, kind of sounds like geh-geh. It's consistently used to say thank you, but doesn't sound like thank you.

Either way it's adorable, but wondering when other people count "words".
