@mrbee: Everyone seems to be oddly busy when we're there. I'm not sure what they're doing... I guess just discussing what's going on with different friends and family. But it must get dull being there all day, and it would probably be nice to have something to get their mind off of things. Even just for a couple of minutes!

@artbee: I borrowed the portable DVD player I used too! :-)

My friend said it was the best thing anyone brought him... he watched dozens of movies there and it really helped the time go by.

@mrbee: I'm not that fancy. But my grandma has a portable dvd player that she doesn't use. Maybe I'll steal that. Thanks!

@artbee: Sorry to hear.. :( Maybe you can take some healthy snacks to the hospital? Nuts, granola, drinks, chocolates, pre-washed fruit?

I once brought a friend at the hospital a portable mini DVD player and lent him my DVD collection. That was a huge hit!

Maybe you could lend them an iPad, if you have one at home?

@blushink: I wanted to bring meals but the problem is they're literally at the hospital all day. She goes home to sleep but he sleeps at the hospital. So they don't have a fridge, and I don't want to bring something that will just rot, because chances are they won't be eating it right when I bring it.

@eeh: She actually just told me that her neighbor is mowing their lawn, and her mom is staying with her to watch her 3 year old all day so she's also taking care of the house. And they have a lot of family and friends there so they can go home, they just don't want to. He tried that and right away got a call that he should come back because she was doing very bad. But I do love the idea of bringing magazines and healthy snacks. Thanks for all of the ideas!

It's a fine line between respecting their space but always not waiting for them to call because most people won't call and ask for help. Cookies are a great start. Is there anything you can do to help them maintain their house since they're spending so much time at the hospital? Maybe their lawn needs mowed or they need some laundry done? Are they doing a lot of sitting and waiting at the hospital? Maybe you could put together a little kit with some magazines, card games, healthy snacks (trail mix, nuts, etc.) so they aren't stuck with hospital/vending machine food, etc. If it's someone your husband is close with maybe you guys could offer to stay with her for an hour or so that way they can run home without worrying about their mother being alone.

oh wow. that's tough. but i would say, maybe food? (seeing she's not eating well) maybe you can have some groceries delivered to her place, or meals.

theres no right way to approach someone... as long as they know you are there for them. they will need time.

My husband's best friend's mom just got diagnosed with a pretty fatal cancer. My husband researched it and a healthy person could live for 5 years if being treated, and the treatment is just as rough as the disease. However, she's not healthy so things aren't looking good at all. Also, his wife is pregnant so she's going through all sorts of stress and not taking care of herself or eating as much as she should.

I feel awful for them, but I don't really know what to do. Of course I said to call if they need anything or want me to bring by food, stop by to pick up some things from their house (they're pretty much living at the hospital now), etc. My husband's dropping off some homemade chocolate chip cookies right now. I thought we should give something healthier but he said comfort food and it's his friend so he knows him best.

Any ideas for something else I can do? I hate that they're going through this and I know there's nothing that can make it better, but I want to try!
