@cranberryapple: It's obnoxious, I know. But it doesn't last forever, you can be sure.

@Weagle: I never give him too much food at one time, only a few pieces at a time, just in case. ^_~ I have a feeling if I try sticking food in his mouth for him, he'll just spit it out. =P

@sarac: I'm too afraid to add plates and utensils to our picture! >_<

I taught my daughter to put the food on the table in front of her instead of dropping it. Some times I'll put a little plate there. She wants to get all the things she doesn't want off her high chair tray quickly - and otherwise she'll just throw it overboard. I'm also careful not to react and make it a game.

I either take it all away, or I pick up everything from her tray and only give her one piece at a time... Usually putting it in her mouth. It's more frustrating for her to eat that way and she realizes life is more fun if she feeds herself.

I let the dogs clean it up, lol.

He will stop. Not right away, but by the time he's around 18 months he should be done with that. The reaction is what is making him do it, now. Just take away whatever is going onto the floor.

@cranberryapple: yeah, that was my reasoning initially. He was still nursing quite a bit. He's not nursing anymore but he Is better about getting his fill before throwing it on the floor :)

@pelikila: Wow, your LO sounds so well behaved! I would LOVE for him to even hand me the food he doesn't want rather than throwing it onto the ground! Omg, and you guys use plates as well? How old is he and when did you introduce plates/utensils? :)

@looch: Nope, he doesn't use any utensils. I just let him shovel food into his mouth with his hands. We did give him a fork here and there, but it was pre-loaded and at least some of the food went into his mouth. Worse thing is when he throws the fork too! Argh!!

@Kemma: Definitely trying to not react to it, but wondering if he's getting the best of me! Hahahaha.

@Mrs. Pen: I want to do that too, where I take away the food when he keeps throwing it, but I wonder if he's too young to get it? He still nurses quite frequently, so I feel that if he misses a meal, it's really no biggee for him since he just gets breast-milk!

@Kemma: @pelikila: same. We have started encouraging LO to give us food if he doesn't want it and that helps!

I ignore him. If he does it at the beginning I will give him the same food back to him and if he keeps doing it, then he doesn't eat. It's his choice! He gets plenty to eat, so I'm not worried if he only eats a few ounces at lunch.

I think it's pretty much a developmental thing, ignoring it or not reacting is probably a good idea so that it doesn't become a game or power struggle.

I like @pelikila:'s idea of having a spot for LO to put the food they don't want.

Does your kid use a spoon or fork? My son used to drop his food on the floor, until I realized he wanted to use utensils.

We haven't had too many issues with dropping food but we also rarely used a highchair once we got to more grown up foods (used a toddler table pretty early on). C tends to want to hand food to me that he doesn't want so I remind him that if he doesn't want it he can leave it on his plate and I point to where on his plate or the table he can leave it. If he still drops it, I pick it up and put on the plate where I pointed and tell him to leave it there if he doesn't want it. It usually works for us.

My son does that too when he doesn't want the food or when he's done eating. I have no advice. I do what you aren't supposed to do and give him another option if its the beginning of a meal.

What if it's at the beginning of meals? How old is your LO and how do you deal with food dropping?

I've noticed that DS (11.5 months) tends to drop food on the ground when it's something he doesn't particularly care for. At first, I considered it a sign of exploring, so I didn't do anything about it, but now at times, he does do it on purpose to get a reaction. If it's at the end of the meal, I usually just say "all done" and end the meal, but when it's at the beginning, I'm unsure, especially since I figure it's because it's a food he doesn't like. For now, when he starts doing that, I just move onto the next food item (which he usually eats) but I feel like I might be training him to drop food when he doesn't like it? What should I do? Will he stop dropping food on his own?? (Yah, right!!)
