@aprk: lots of developmental stuff starting to go on at this age and I'm sure babies think sleep is for the weak!

Will your LO nurse to sleep and then sleep better if he's with you? Does he sleep in the stroller or car? I'm thinking your first step might be to do whatever it takes to get your LO out of the overtired cycle so that you can then work on some sort of sleep training.

Another thought I had was would your LO respond to a more structured routine? It might be worth keeping a record of all baby's eating, activity and sleeping for a week and see if any patterns emerge. It could be that he's perhaps overstimulated or just has his eat, sleep, play cycles out of whack.

Hang in there Mama, you're doing great!

It sounds like we have the same baby when it comes to sleep. The only way right now I get him to have decent naps is to hold him. Which really isn't that good.

I hope you are able to figure something out. Do you pump at all? Could DH take a night of giving him bottles?

@aprk: oh dear! i am so sorry! what does your day typically look like right now? how does he fall asleep/where/when? 5.5 months was a turning point for us in the positive direction FWIW!

Wait? I don't know if this is much consolation but I had a crappy mapper most of the first year. Almost all her naps were held when I was on leave and my mom somehow someway got her to nap in bed once I was back at work. We then had 2 30-minute naps at daycare until 12 months when she settled into a longer consolidated nap.

Her night sleep was not as bad so I stayed sort of sane bit it just sucks!

Idk. I have a crappy napper too, and I'm just waiting for the day she no longer needs a nap, lol. At 11 months old we probably have a long way to go...

You could try...
Shorter wake time
Longer wake time
Letting cry
Car naps, stroller naps, swing naps
Nap routine

None or all may work. I think they just nap when they're "ready." We've gone trough phases of good and bad, but have traveled a lot so mostly bad naps. :(

And don't feel bad about feeling insane. I've raised my voice at lo and said some less than perfect things.. :( not proud of it but when you're spending HOURS a day for weeks and weeks trying to get an overtired lo to nap... It's hard to keep your sanity!! I don't think I did any permanent damage though. :)

Maybe try putting baby down for nap even sooner than you think that baby needs it. For ages, I felt like C couldn't be awake for more than 59 minutes without becoming "overtired". Majorly shortening his wake time helped us a lot. Good luck!!!

@grizz: I gave my baby the finger today. I am slowing going mad.

@cascademom: he doesn't respond to CIO. I think we're gonna call a sleep consultant.

Sleep train. We did CIO at 6 months old when we were at the end of our rope.

No advice, but standing in solidarity. DS takes crap naps, has crap night sleep, and after 5 solid nights of hourly wake-ups to nurse, I have pretty much lost the will to live. Wine, please!

... you have a shitty napper? A (almost 5 months) is visibly tired, and either screams bloody murder or laughs in my face when I try to put him down for a nap. Happens when he just shows signs of beig tired, when it's been 20 minutes or so, and when he clearly exhausted. I am losing, mightily. And he only sleeps in 2 hour stretches at night.

Excuse my while I go stab myself in the eye.
