I have and do say something, especially when kids are visibly older. Problem here is that I don't speak the local language, so kids aren't always going to understand me. But I still say something. I think it draws attention to the fact that they know and I know they are being naughty, even if they don't understand what I say. In my experience, the kids have always stopped whatever it is they were doing.

I would use my teacher voice and say something about being nice if their parent was not around/acting on the situation.

I will usually say something in a kind voice about being gentle, if it happens again and there still isn't a parent I will either use a stern tone and guide the child I am watching away or I will find the parent. Thankfully, it is rare that there isn't a parent around at the park we go to most frequently.

I tell them that they are not allowed to hurt my child, ever. And then I look around to make sure that they have a parent coming to tell them the same thing. If not, I find their parents and tell them what happened.

I always say, "please be gentle" even if they are close in age...to and older toddler like a 3 year-old, I would tell them it wasn't nice and to play carefully with babies.

If they were the same age I wouldn't say anything. Usually at LOs school they say "please use gentle hands with your friends."

@SleepyMonkey: I would've done the same thing. That's a big age difference. If they had been the same age, I would be less inclined to intervene.

Id say something to her about it not being nice and having to be careful with kids smaller then her. I used to feel awkward about it but now I don't care. I don't think little kids are bullies but they have a lot of learning to do especially about controlling impulses.

3 and 11 months is a big age difference! I don't know what I'd do if that was DD. But in my eyes, that was outright bullying (because of the age difference).

@SleepyMonkey: Well, in that case, I would have likely said "we keep our hands to ourselves." It's more meaningful to toddlers and has the action that we want them to observe, you know what i mean?

For me, it depends on whether the children are close in age...if they are, I leave them to work it out on their own. If it is clearly a case of an older child bullying or rough-housing, then I step in.

I really haven't had to deal with this too much yet but I think if it's really uncalled for or violent I would approach the kid. Those kids need to know that just because their parents aren't around, doesn't mean they can do whatever they want. If it's just a little pushing, I want my kid to be able to stand up for herself and not rely on her parents to step in all the time. It does depend on the age though.

I totally put little kids in their place if their parents aren't around and they do something naughty.

I probably shouldn't, but whatevs. Lol

Eta: it also depends on the age though... I deal with a lot of older kids because of our older boys.

Today we were on the playground and LO (11 months) was sitting there and an older girl came up to her and pushed her over for no reason. I ran over and said "that's not very nice!" and the girl frowned. her dad came over and told her to say she was sorry, and she did. but i felt so awkward.

what do you usually do in that situation?
