We definitely had that phase too, out of nowhere, since LO used to love his changing table. I agree with @Hilsy85: that an unusual or special toy works best - the diaper cream tube is the best! Or right now he really likes a comb. Random stuff from the changing basket. He got a lot better about changes after a month or so of hating it, now he just tries to sit up but isn't as screamy anymore.

Try giving him a "special" toy that e doesn't get any other time, like your phone or diaper cream or something. That usually helps us! Now at 11.5 months it is getting better so don't despair!

LO started flipping out during diaper changes when she was sick so I thought she laying down might not feel good to her sinuses. I started laying her head on the boppy (no boppy accidents so far) and that made things a little bit better. Only now she has learned how to get to a sitting position from there so we're probably back to the drawing board.

Yes, same here. I started nursing before changing so that helped. Less tears BUT she would turn over right when I put her down on the changing table and it's always a struggle to get the diaper on. Ugh. Oh, but when we are out and I change her diaper at some random place she CRIES AND SCREAMS until I'm done and pick her up.

@Adira: Been there. LO is 9 months and does it a few times a week. She just melts down when I put her down to change her. I'll hand her a toy and talk to her while I do it. Mostly I try to just change her as quickly as possible!

@pregnantbee: Yeah, sometimes tickling him works for me and also if I blow on his face, it surprises him and sometimes he calms down. But sometimes none of it works and he just screams and screams until I finally pick him back up again! And then he's FINE!! Bleh!

When R freaks out, I give her the hair brush to play with, a burp cloth, small toy, really anything I can get my hands on to keep her happy. 90% of the time it works.

It's so tough! We're down to 2 nursing sessions a day, and I have no idea how to do it with less crying and NOT nursing -- actively trying to wean at 15 mo now! Oh, and I should add that I just act calmly and change him before nursing if there's any poop.

I've also tried tickling him, pointing to the alphabet on the poster above his table, singing various songs, asking him to find his belly button, pacifier, lovey, whatever. Sometimes something clicks and causes him to stop crying. Other times, not so much. He's fine as soon as I pick him up again. Grr.

@pregnantbee: I was thinking about doing that actually, but I usually nurse him back to sleep in the morning and a diaper change after would wake him up. I have tried changing between sides (he nurses both sides), but I think that made him even more mad!! I can't win!

Same thing here! In the mornings, I do exactly what @pregnantbee: does. Nurse first, then change, and at least that diaper change and dressing is calm. But in the evening, especially at bedtime? FOR.GET.IT. Sometimes the paci helps, but rarely.

Same thing happens here. No advice, sorry! In the mornings I've been getting him, then nursing BEFORE changing so he's calm. Then I'll put him down to change. Fewer tears, but still not awesome.

Gahhh!!! Well, it's helpful to know I'm not alone in this! But I feel sorry for us all!!! Xander acts like he's being murdered when I'm just trying to change his diaper! And then as soon as I pick him back up, the tears are over!

Maybe I'll try more toys. I used to have a set of toy keys on the changing table for him to play with, but they've migrated to the diaper bag. Maybe I'll try bringing those back out and seeing if that helps!

Ugh...we've been dealing with this since he learned how to crawl. It's absolute torture. For after bath, just to get his diaper on, we grab our tablet and play him Sesame Street songs! His new favorite is the Jimmy Fallon singing the theme song with everyone! It's the only thing that will keep him calm.

YUPPPP. We've been dealing with this for a while now. I don't know WHAT is up with my daughter but she hates diaper changes! When I put her down on the changing table, she acts like I'm putting her down on a bed of needles. So I switched to changing her our bed and it's helped. She still screams from time to time but it's a lot less often.

So Xander's generally a pretty easy going baby BUT lately he's been FREAKING OUT during diaper changes. Basically it goes like this:

Xander wakes up from a nap or sleeping all night. He babbles to himself or plays with his feet until someone comes to get him. He's all smiles and we pick him up. I put him down on the changing table and CUE THE TEARS! He starts crying and wailing hysterically, slamming his legs down, arching his back, shaking his arms, big fat tears streaming down his face! WTF is going on??? And what am I supposed to do about it??? My current method is just to continue with his diaper change while trying to talk to him soothingly and offer him toys or tickle his belly to distract him, but it's not working!!! He just cries and cries and cries until I'm FINALLY done changing him and pick him back up!!
