One option is mini day camps. Here's a soccer one:

@Mrs. Bee: With HS jobs so hard to come by in the cities, have you considered an older HS student or college student to watch the kids in your home? Or even someone you know who is currently unemployed? I would think that it would be less expensive than an actual day care and the kids would not be in a strange environment.

luckily our daycare only closes on the 26th and 2nd, both holidays for us as well. But we'll have family over so will probably keep him at home anyway-- do you want to ship Charlie up to our daycare for a week?? ;)

My company provides back up care up to 20 days a year, they use bright horizons and those facilities are usually closed the same days the company is and open all other time. It cost 10 a day to use the back up care, the plus is that they are located on the 2nd floor of my office building the downside is different kids = different germs. But so far I've been able to work from home, have my husband take off (9 weeks of vacation time but its scheduled in Oct the prior year), take off myself, or plan a family getaway during that time.

Our daycare is closed the week between Christmas and New Years too. I am using two days of vacation and then my MIL is going to help out for two days. Next year we will just plan to use vacation days when daycare is closed.

Since my husband is a professor, hopefully he will be off the days a daycare would close for the holidays/summer so it won’t be too much of an issue for us. Other days we’ll have to work around – he’s more likely to possibly be off that day already (or part of the day), then I might just have to take a half day, or a few hours.

My mom lives 45 minutes away and could probably help out as well, and my fingers are crossed my MIL moves close to us after the baby is born, so she can help too.

I'm lucky to have a flexible job so I'll likely work from home when I'm in this situation - that's what most of my coworkers including my boss currently do!

This is going to be my nightmare when we have kids because both of us HAVE to work and we will be skating on thin ice financially in the first place to pay for 'regular' daycare. So any kind of backup will be almost impossible. I'm hoping to make mommy friends who are interested in some kind of an emergency nanny share or something..

That is a plus to our in-home daycare. She's really flexible and doesn't close except for the major holidays and up to a week of vacation (with 30 days notice). DH is a teacher, so we actually pay for quite a bit of time that we don't use.

I'm not sure what to do next summer when DH is off from school. DH might just work part time since we'll be paying regardless, if we stay with the same day care provider.

I'm lucky to have family close! My mom's office closes that week too, and DS's daycare did too (I'm now SAHM, so not an issue anymore). We were very lucky for it to work out that way!

Wow, that is a lot of time closed. I purposely picked our daycare because it follows the corporate calendar and does not close a lot. But when it does close on days that we don't have off, I have to stay home with my daughter and take the day off.

I begged and plead a lot. To my mother and to my employer. My mother lives in another state but she's not working so she will take on half the time. The other half my husband and I will split taking time off. It sucks. I just got back from maternity leave and felt awful asking for more time. And my husband just got a job so it may reflect poorly on him to request the time so soon. But what can ya do?

Edit- I should actually mention that I'm in the same boat. So I know all too well what you're going through!

@mrsbee - do you have any daycares nearby that do backup care? We have some of those near us. Of course, you're now paying for another daycare, but you have the option of dropping your child off there if your daycare is closed for any reason.

Ouch, that is a long time without daycare. My daycare is closed one day that the office is open (Friday the 23rd). I am going to take that day off and unofficially work from home. I may bring the baby in to see people as well.
